What is the best uni accomodation for a first year?
I wouldn’t say there’s a bad first year accom in Newcastle! Most are now en-suite, modern + walking distance
Wellington St Plaza - next to football stadium, 5-10 min max walk to city centre and 15 min walk to uni, hosts around 800 students
Portland Green - further away so slightly cheaper, still walking distance, lively, hosts around 1000 students
There are ones on the campus itself, such as Park View (very popular so the price reflects that), Kensington Terrace (higher number of flat mates), Windsor Terrace (right next to the library)
I'm so glad you're interested in coming to Newcastle University! We have a great variety of accommodation options over a range of different price points and all of our accommodation is within a 20-minute walk of campus so there is something for everyone!
Firstly, all of our accommodation is self-catered which means you will be buying your own food, making your own meals, etc. This is great for building up independent living skills and you can always do food shops/cook with your flatmates. It's important to consider how many people you would like to live with. If you would like a quieter flat, Wellington St Plaza may be a good option as you share a flat with 3-6 people. If you would prefer a busier flat, at Kensington Terrace, you can share with up to 17 people.
The majority of our accommodation options are en-suite but we do have shared bathroom options too. These can be found at Marris House and Windsor Terrace and include a washbasin in your room. These rooms are cheaper than en-suite rooms so they are good to take into account! A massive plus of Marris House is that your flat comes with a washer-dryer meaning you escape using circuit laundry.
A final thing to consider is how close you would like to be to the building you will spend your time studying in. For example, if you are thinking about studying one of our Business-related degrees, Wellington St Plaza is right next to our Business School. Alternatively, if you are thinking about studying engineering, Park Terrace accommodation is right next to the Stephenson building for engineering. If you would like to take a break from campus and have a scenic walk into university, Portland Green is a great option as it is still walking distance and is based within the quirky area of Ouseburn.
Overall, there is no 'best' accommodation for a first-year student as they all offer something different and it depends on your preferences! Hopefully this helps, let us know if you have any questions 😊
