Switching from Law with business to Law at Exeter

Does anyone know if it would be possible to change from law with business to a straight law LLB once I have accepted my offer. Exeter offered me law with business but I don't think that I have the necessary level of interest in business and I would prefer to live on the Streatham campus as opposed to Penryn. Could I potentially switch for my second and third years and finish on the straight LLB course. Any insight would be valuable, thank you.

Once your in the university you can sometimes change the course, but because Law in so competitive they may be stricter about it. I would contact the admissions team at Exeter and ask them to see if it is possible. You could go through clearing if the course is in clearing, there will be specific clearing number but don't decline your offer until it is confirmed (if it is in clearing that is).

Hello 🙂

Congratulations on your place :h:

Do you have the grades for straight law? The only way to know for sure is to contact the admissions team and check what your options are. I think it is a risky strategy to assume transferring after first year will be possible because sometimes it isn't.

Good luck

Hi @BillyL18

Usually it's possible to switch courses but it depends on the available spaces in the LLB course and whether you've covered the same core modules in Law and business as in LLB in your first year.

Did you finish your first year or are you starting it September? If you haven't started yet then maybe It's ideal that you switch courses before starting.
I recommend that you contact their admissions team as soon as possible and explain your situation where they can advise you on what to do (0300 555 60 60 OR use this enquiry form). 🤗

Hi BillyL18,

Congratulations for your place with us!

Unfortunately, if it will not be possible for you to transfer due to the nature of the first year of the course. There are quite a few differences between the Penryn course and the Streatham one which makes it impossible to switch between - in Streatham you get a traditional law degree experience, whereas in Penryn it is quite different meaning that the modules wouldn't align and you'd miss the required modules from year one at Streatham.

As for the business, I find it quite refreshing to be able to take a break from how intense law can be and go into a more creative and very different module (not to say it is easier just different). It allows you to think a bit differently and meet different people too. It is also extra attractive to future employers as it demonstrated you have commercial awareness which is increasingly more and more important.

I study Law with Business at Exeter’s Penryn campus, and it’s a small, friendly, coastal setting with lots of individual support. The course is a qualifying law degree with the same University of Exeter name and reputation, covering all the modules needed for the SQE route, and the business modules help build commercial awareness. Because we’re smaller, we get unique opportunities like mock trials with real judges, which really help build advocacy skills and confidence. You still have full access to Exeter’s careers services, mooting competitions, and events at the Streatham campus, plus the bonus of living in beautiful Cornwall with a strong sense of community.

If we've made you an alternative offer for the Penryn campus then we can offer you overnight accomodation on Fri 15th or Sat 16th and a travel bursary to contribute to travelling here so that you can come to see the campus for yourself, meet with current students and our academics as well as explore the local area a little as well. We understand it is a big decision to commit to a number of years studying your degree so this is a great opportunity to find out more before you make your decision. Even if you are not sure about visiting we do have student ambassadors here that you can speak by phone with to find out more.

Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Hope this helps a bit!
