University: Birmingham or Warwick?

I'm stuck on which uni to choose, University of Warwick or University of Birmingham. My commute to Warwick would be an hour give or take, but I really like the modules there and the financial help is great. However, Birmingham is much closer, it is a red brick uni, and the campus is prettier. When it comes to biosci (my chosen course), Warwick comes out on top, but only just so I don't know if its worth tho 2hr+ journeys everyday (I also want to get a professional placement, so that means I would have to commute there too, potentially further). Can someone please give me advice on which to choose?
Hi there! :hello:

I accept that Warwick has a much uglier campus than Birmingham but that shouldn't be a major factor in your decision!

I think it boils down to whether the commute is worth it for a more interesting course and genuinely that's quite a hard decision. Usually we'd say go for the more interesting course, but I do accept if you're planning to commute that spending 2h commuting each time you need to go into campus might get you down, in the same way you might not want to do that commute for a better job.

It's going to come down to whether you think the commuting is worth it for the better course I guess?

Hey @intelligible-con 👋

It's great that you're taking time to weigh up your options!

Have you considered staying in accommodation at Warwick at all? If you find the course itself more interesting at Warwick, I'd be inclined to advise you to strongly consider going there! The last thing you want to do is commit to a course at a university and not particularly enjoy the modules you will be learning about.

Here are some other factors I'd urge you to consider:

Local area - What's the local area like? What can you get involved with? Would you prefer to be in a busy city, or a quieter area?

Student support - what support is available to you as a student should you need it?

Career support - which university seems to have a better support network and resources for obtaining a career on a short-term basis (internships, volunteering, placements) and more long-term (graduate role, entrepreneurship, entry-level role etc).

Clubs/societies - which university offers the most appealing clubs/societies that you can get involved with? What's their Student's Union like? clubs/societies are the perfect way to make friends, and so it's important to choose a university that offers clubs/societies matching your interests - especially if you have a hobby that you'd like to continue in university.

Those are just a few considerations - I'd recommend writing down pros and cons for both!

Let me know if we can offer any further advice, and best of luck with whichever university you choose!

Hiya @intelligible-con ,
Is there a possibility of staying in student accommodation closer to Warwick? You may have accommodation allocation priority if you are a first year / clearing student and submit your accommodation application online by 19th August. Aside from building aesthetics, what matters most is that you are in a uni and course which is the best personal fit for you. What are the differences in the teaching or modules between these two courses? I would suggest messaging some of the uni's student reps to get a better idea on what life is like in these unis 🤗
I hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck in your university journey 🥳
