Conditions Pending PGCE

Hi all,

I’ve accepted a place at Sheffield Hallam on a PGCE but naturally this is conditional until my health and background checks are completed.

I’ve completed all checks and my two references have been supplied, but my place is still showing as pending on the DfE portal.

Am I panicking about nothing or is this quite common? Hallam don’t list all the criteria individually so I’m unsure what, if anything is missing.

I’ve tried calling, but with clearing all the phone lines are closed and I’m anxious that my place isn’t confirmed with only two weeks before my start date, also concerned waiting for an email response will hold everything up further.

Anyone else been in the same boat? Not sure whether I’m just worrying about nothing!

Plenty of time to get this sort, worry not. Have you submitted documents for a DBS check? And have you done an occupational health check through the uni?

Thank you for the reassurance! I’m a worrier and like to have everything in a row, so applying to uni late is very unlike me!

I have received my DBS and completed my occupational health check too, as far as I’m aware I should be good to enrol! The only thing I’m panicking about is that I graduated in 2020 and haven’t managed to get an academic reference, not sure if this is classed as within the past 5 years or not!

Have the university acknowledged receipt of your references?

It says on the DfE portal that they have been received by the university, but I haven’t heard anything from Hallam directly.

As far as I can tell, the university usually lists the conditions individually and says “met” or “pending” for each thing, butHallam just has one long list that all says “pending”.

Do you have a contact email for the course administrator(s)? I would just rattle off a polite "is there anything else I need to do?" message and see if you get a response by end of play tomorrow. If not, call on Monday.

I have the course leader’s details, but unfortunately he’s just retired and I’m not sure who his successor is!

I’ve dropped the admissions team an email and will try calling again next week once clearing has hopefully calmed down!

Okay I'm having a look through the staff search pages now and will get back to you.
What type of PGCE were you looking at?

@hallamstudents, any idea for an email address for the administrative staff on the PGCE course?

Hi,

Congratulations on your place at Hallam! 👏 We are so excited to have you join us! 😊

Please call the confirmation and admissions line on the main clearing number 0330 024 6390 and select option 2 or fill in this form on the website. Hopefully they can put your mind at ease!

Thanks,
Helen

I have applied to the D&T course!

I’ll try calling the number the Hallam rep shared below but they didn’t know what to do with me this morning 😂

It's really annoying, the hallam website seems to have contact details for all teaching staff but nothing for administrative staff - and it's the administrative staff who always know all the answers :grumble:

Let us know how you get on. Hopefully by Monday there are other phone lines running which aren't all being redirected into the clearing hotline :colondollar:

Hi,

Did you manage to speak to someone on that number or complete the form?

Thanks
Helen

Hi Helen,

I did speak to someone, but unfortunately they weren’t able to help as I hadn’t applied via UCAS what with it being a teaching degree. I’ve dropped education admissions an email so I’m hoping they’ll get back to me soon!

Just worried as my first day in uni is September 1st and I’ve not heard anything back yet!

Don't expect any admin other the "clearing" to be done at this time of year.

This is my concern, I can’t hold of anyone because of clearing but need to know if I’m starting uni in two weeks or not!

Clearing admin won't be being done by the PGCE administration team, it's just that the contact details for those people aren't anywhere on the website which is hugely disappointing. Ring up and ask to be transferred to the Teacher Training team.

Thanks for your reply!

I tried this morning but they said it’s all on a switchboard at the moment so there’s no way to get through via phone. I’ve dropped them a couple of emails and just have to hope they get back to me soon.

Clearing phone calls will reduce a lot other the next day or two. Can also try finding members of staff from the department on LinkedIn (and university research pages) and email them explaining the issue and asking what direct number to call.

So has is been updated to not pending?

Have you uploaded your DBS to the DBS update service? Made that mistake and delayed my enrolment 😬
