Alevel Maths

I’ve just seen the grade boundaries for edexcel maths alevel and they are very high. I am starting a levels in September, one being maths but for the unis I am aiming for I would need at least an A. I’m not sure how likely this is considering the grade boundaries. Could I have some advice on whether I should keep doing it or swap it to something else? I’m predicted an 8 at gcse.

Hi @SaraG0803,

It's normal to worry about A Levels and grade boundaries however, don't let this years grade boundaries put you off the course! Grade boundaries vary year on year and often reflect the paper so it could be completely different when you sit your exams.

If you enjoyed maths at GCSE then I wouldn't let this put you off! It can be a lot of work but a predicted grade 8 shows you absolutely have the capability of doing well at A Level if you're willing to put in the effort!

Good luck with your GCSE results and future studies!

I was in the same boat as you, got an 8 at gsce and I got a B at a level, honestly its doable but very difficult, I know people in my school who also got 8s but have gotten As and A*s, if you’re really willing to work at it and the courses you want need maths, take it ofc but honestly if your courses don’t need maths it could be easier to take something else or maybe just take it til the end of y12 - that being said it all depends on how much you’re willing to work at it and I’m sure you’ll be fine! Xx

Do you think you’re generally stronger at maths/sciences or humanities? It sounds like you want to do maths and tbh my biggest advice is start with it but keep it for the year cause I got totally catfished by how easy the first term was so I dropped my other subject. If you want to try and go for it there’s no harm in that! It’s a great subject but you defo dont need it to get into a great law course

To be honest I’m not sure what my strengths are… I’m predicted mainly 8s all round but I do enjoy science and maths a lot but I also love history so I’m taking that. I’m also doing economics so I know that pairs nicely with maths.
Grade boundaries exist to make up for a paper being a bit easier or harder from year to year, as it's impossible for them to always be the exact same level of difficulty, so if the boundaries are high this year then it means it was an easier paper!

I think you may taking my exact combo 😭😭I just got my results today, I did history econ and maths got AAB, honestly econs chill asf but history is another story, if you take maths with easier subjects it’s defo doable but doing both history and maths when I’m not intuitively good at maths was defo a mistake because history is a lot

I dropped English but honestly i should’ve kept it because i think I could’ve gotten a better grade with English rather than maths - or at least because y2 maths gets a lot harder, I thought y1 was defo reasonable, honestly if you do take maths take it with easy subjects cuz it makes such a difference if you have more time to practice

Thank you! I’ll think about what I could do better in when I get my results next week. English is definitely not an option for me tho because I hate it so much 😭
