Univeristy of Glasgow Elitism/Classism?

Was suggested to repost!!!!

I'm a working-class girl, and while I thought it was not as bad nowadays, I've recently been seeing a lot of articles regarding uni of Glasgow's problem with elitism still being a major thing in 25

Does anyone (who is not the UofG rep, sorry :[ ) have any experience with this? I've already had it tough and don't want to be judged because I have little money and come from a state school... 😮*💨

This is a tough one.... I think all high-ranking unis will have an element of elitism - it's not necessarily rooted in the institution though and depends on the diversity of student body.

Have you visited Glasgow? It might be worth it to see how it feels for you, check out the Student Union and type of student groups on offer.

Similarly student accommodation might be worth considering in terms of affordability and the socio-economic background of students who live there - just to ensure you feel comfortable. You can do accommodation tours when you attend an open day.

Glasgow as a city is not elitist and if you immerse yourself in local life and pick up a part time job I think any judgement would be limited.

I went to Birmingham (grew up in Brighton), working class roots, state-school, I met some of the most affluent/privileged/ 'minted' people I'd ever met. It wasn't an issue, they were lovely, they didn't become friends for life but we had fun and got on well - the reality was they didn't care about what my parents earned and I think they were very aware of their own privilege and means. I never felt judged, my fear was much greater than the reality of the situation.

I have! One of my parents side is Scottish, so I've been on holiday to Glasgow.

I've already been accepted and it's my dream university as it's beautiful and the course is perfect for my goals and such. I got the one of the cheaper accommodations too. No matter what answers I got here I was going to stick it out anyhow. Just needed a heads up, if that makes sense ☺️ The amount of places saying uni of Glas (and Edinburgh I think?) were quite bad in classism worried me a bit

Hopefully you're right!! I completely have been ignoring the fact I'll need a life outside the uni too, so thanks for that as well

Hey,

I know you mentioned wanting replies from someone who isn't a UofG rep, but thought I'd give you my take anyways to help fill you in. I am an international student here but I come from a middle-income to low-income family and I work alongside my degree. I have two part-time jobs on the side, one at the University and another one bartending at a restaurant in the city centre. I haven't personally noticed any hate or judgement because of my background. A lot of my friends - even some who have studied in private schools in the UK - do work part-time either during the summer or during term time in all sorts of jobs ranging from delivery drivers for restaurants, working at the amazon warehouse, or hospitality jobs in town.

However, I will agree with the other reply in that all high ranking universities have an element of elitism which isn't rooted in the institution. While there are probably some students who feel that way this isn't the majority of people I have interacted with during my four years in University. Those who are from different backgrounds to mine, have still been lovely people who never judged me for the cards we were dealt.

I hope this helps x

Thank you for typing that out. 🙂

The reason why I'd have prefered you not to answer like requested is because you're kinda in a position where you can't be negative about the uni. At least not with full honesty? Not saying what you said is a lie, but that if you did have anything negative to say, I have no way of properly knowing if you'd be able to include it or not
