Hi! I do EPP (Economics, Psychology and Philosophy) and for most such social science degrees you don’t really need any particular equipment or tech. For the philosophy part of my degree most of the assessments were essays so all I was really using was Word/Google Docs - sometimes having loads of tabs open in which case having a slower laptop may be annoying.

I can imagine PPL would have a lot of reading/writing, so you might like having pens/highlighters or importing texts to something like Goodnotes on an iPad to annotate them. I took the same intro to philosophy module with PPL students in first year and I found that printing out lecture handouts/seminar sheets and writing on them worked best for me, but it depends on what you prefer. When it comes to textbooks and books the majority are available either online or at the library so you don’t need to buy anything unless you really want to.

Overall I wouldn’t say you need to go out and buy much, if you have a basic laptop and some stationery that should do! Of course after the first few weeks you’ll also figure out what works best for each module.

Hope that helps and let me know if you have any other questions!
Best wishes,
Jasmine (Student Ambassador)
