Terrible AS grades for science

So I genuinely am doomed- I finished year 12 and I got my AS results for biology and chemistry today. DU- I did worse than I even think I could. It looks comical next to my Psychology mock which is an A…so my grades are ADU. I want to go into Nutritional Sciences at KCL, and for that I need BBB🙂*↕️. Is there a way to resit AS? If not, is there a way for my predicted grade to not be so low? My school does give importance to AS and I haven’t discussed anything with them yet but I definitely need to :frown:. Can someone give me hope that it’s not all doomed & that I can achieve those grades in Biology and Chemistry? Any time efficient tips & resources? Will I even be able to get an offer from a uni?

Hi @hertcats ,

I would say first of all - try not to panic! I know results day can be an incredibly stressful time but your grades don't define you.

Universities know that you can improve between AS and A level so they will consider this when looking at your application. It's worth having a strong personal statement which shows your passion in Nutritional Science and any external experience can really help with this!

As for your predicted grades, it's definitely worth speaking to your teachers about the situation even though it can feel nerve-wracking. They're there to help you and have likely seen students in a similar situation before! You will probably have internal assessments when you go back in September so it's worth preparing for these to put you in a strong position for receiving the predicted grades you're looking for.

In terms of revision, I would recommend working through past papers and practice questions to become confident at the sort of questions which are likely to appear on an exam paper. It's also worth going over old content to refresh your knowledge as you go so you don't have the whole course to revise in a few days.

AS levels aren't the final predictor of A level grades! If you work hard to get strong predicted grades and create a good personal statement, you can absolutely get an offer for Nutritional Science!

Hey @hertcats!

As mentioned above, the best thing you can do is talk to your Biology and Chemistry teachers. Many students find themselves in this predicament, and teachers are often very willing to help. Discuss your university plans with them and what grades you need (BBB) to make a competitive application. They may be able to base your predicted grades on your Year 13 mocks or on class tests; as long as you show the ability to achieve that higher grade in some capacity, teachers should be open to raising it for your UCAS application. If you need to, you can always reach out to your Head of Year/Head of Sixth Form as well.

Try not to be too disheartened by your results - these sorts of things happen all the time, and they certainly don't stop students going to university in the long term. 🙂

Hope this helps,
Eve (Kingston Rep).

Which exam board do you take? Were these AS results official exams or internal mocks at school?

Yes I can. It’s just genuinely disheartening because i’ve never failed an exam…I’ve always been an A/B student so genuinely it just really affects my belief in myself. I don’t even know if I’m even able to achieve the grade I want

OCR A. Bio and chem were external AS exams, psychology internal mock. I’m honestly not too worried about Biology because I have some hope that I can work my way up- I achieved an 8 in GCSE so it gives me a little bit of belief in myself. However, for Chem i’ve never been great- 6 in GCSE and i’ve never been interested in it in the slightest. It really makes me doubt my ability to achieve what I need in A Levels :frown:

I’m not familiar with OCR so please somebody correct me if I’m wrong but I believe you should be able to resist your AS modules? If so I’d recommend doing that.

I just checked the KCL nutritional sciences bsc site and it says the required grades are ABB or contextually BBC? Just wanted to clarify this.

The good news is the website says it also accepted resits!

I know it must feel frustrating with your results, but I’d like to remind you that it’s your first time doing AS Levels, and the jump is huge. It’s natural to take a little time to find your feet. Congrats on your A in Psych, and for all of the hard work you put in for all 3 a levels (because this is a very hard combo!!)
