Hello!

It's brilliant to know you are considering the University of York! It's an important decision, so hopefully we can help break it down a little for you. 😊

Both York and Leeds have excellent reputations for Law, so you’re looking at two strong choices. That said, York has some real strengths and undeniable prestige that set us apart and could be a brilliant fit for you. 🤝

We’re currently ranked 15th in the UK for Law (Complete University Guide 2025), which puts us a little ahead of Leeds. Students here consistently rate our Law School very highly for support and resources - in fact, in the latest National Student Survey we were 3rd in the Russell Group and 6th across the UK for learning resources. That means you’ll have access to outstanding facilities, guidance, and teaching to really get the best out of your degree.

🏆️ One of the distinctive things about Law at York is our problem-based learning approach. Students have described this as a "super charged" way of learning. Meaning, we don’t just dip into a problem-based approach now and then - it’s at the heart of how we teach Law here. Instead of only sitting in lectures and taking notes, you’ll be working in small groups on real-world legal scenarios every week. That means from day one you’re thinking and acting like a lawyer: researching cases, debating with your peers, and finding solutions - while still getting all the academic depth you’d expect from a Russell Group institution. It’s more hands-on, more collaborative, and it really helps build the skills employers are looking for! This should give you an edge when applying for internships, placements, and graduate roles.

Of course, rankings and teaching matter, but so does the student experience. York offers a really special balance: it’s a beautiful, historic city with a vibrant cultural scene and loads of green space, but it’s also buzzing with life. Our city centre is just a short cycle or bus ride from campus, so you’ll always feel connected.🌳

Leeds is great if you want the big-city vibe, but if you’re looking for a combination of top-quality teaching, an innovative Law programme, and a welcoming, lively city that’s a little easier to navigate, York is truly hard to beat. 🤍

I hope that has helped, and I hope you'll soon find your place here to study Law!

Best of luck,
T ☺️
