Southampton vs Glasgow

How would you choose between these 2 universities doing Engineering?

Hello @lilyky8!

Whilst I cannot speak on behalf of these universities, I myself like many other students was very stuck when choosing which university to go to. In general, when picking between two different universities it is best to go and visit those campuses in person to really get a feel for what life would be like there, talk to your course leaders and just generally see what student life is like at each.

However if your more focused on which one is a better course, you can visit each universities website and look at their statistics such as the graduate employment rate, the reputation of each university, the course ranking in the UK or work experience available. You could also check out any blogs from students at that university on the student room here to get their opinion on that university.

Personally, I think it is more important to see the university in person as you will be studying there for a few years and its important you are happy whilst you study there and that you enjoy living there for the meantime. I also think it is good to look at other things the university has to offer outside of your degree such as societies, clubs, work experience or even study abroad if that is something you are interested in.

Good luck on your search and hopefully this helps a little.

HI @lilyky8 ,

How's it going 😄?

We're thrilled to hear that you're interested in studying here at the University of Glasgow.

I think the first thing to highlight is that studying in Scotland and England is different. The main difference is that in Scotland you will study for 4 years, as opposed to 3 in England. The main reason for this is that the Scottish education system is different. Why we think it's really beneficial for you is that it will allow you to tailor your skills and have the opportunity to integrate placements or study abroad as part of your programme.

Although I'm a Life Science student, I do have a couple of friends who study engineering. I particularly love the GU Rockerty society, which is predominantly made up of engineering students. There's a really cool video showcasing them and what they do here - https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7617546

Glasgow is amazing city, especially the West End where we're based. It's a really young vibrant area of the city and we feel the perfect place for anyone to enjoy their time whilst studying. As I'm not an engineering student, I'd recommend you chat with some of our engineering students here - https://www.gla.ac.uk/study/studentlife/askastudent/ to get more information on the course content and what you can expect.

If there are any other questions, please just reach out

Best of luck with whatever University you decide to go for, it's a really exciting time.

Thanks,
Graham, 3rd Year Student Rep
