Has anyone ever switched A Levels in year 13?

So this is a really unusual situation but in the beginning of year 12 I wanted to do A Level french as one of my subjects along with biology and psychology. However, at that time the uni course I was looking into required chemistry so I had to sacrifice French and switch to chemistry. Fast forward to today, I’ve gotten my AS results back after working my ass off and it’s just horrible. I knew this would happen because I’ve never been a chemistry person- it has never stuck with me and I don’t know if it ever will. What makes it worse is that I’m not longer even interested in the uni course I was originally looking into- so i’m doing chemistry for no reason whatsoever with the risk of getting an awful grade in year 13. I’ve emailed my head of year for a super crazy request; I want to switch to A Level French in the beginning of Year 13 and cover 2 years worth of content in one. This may seem crazy but I think my situation is worth looking at…I grew up in France and i’m fluent in French. Although not in very advanced French, I have a very strong foundation (which even led me to achieve a 9 in GCSE, almost full marks across the whole board). I’ve also spoken to one of my friends who’s also got a french background doing A Level French and she said that she believes that I could catch up in about a month or 2, since most of the content was almost a continuation from GCSE french and they hadn’t started any work on books or films.

Has anyone ever done something like this before? Lol just so I know i’m not completely reaching for the stars

Hi Hertcats,

Thanks for reaching out - please rest assured that this is not a silly request and that actually, its perfectly normal to change your mind about what you're interested in studying.

Having done A-Level French and Chemistry, I completely understand how you found Chem difficult - I did too and found French a lot easier even as a non-native speaker.

Usually it would be difficult to cover 2 years worth of French in 1 year, but given that you already have such a strong foundation this may be more than achievable for you.

All you can do is chat to your subject teachers and your head of year like you have done, explain your situation and see what they say - but in your case this does not seem like an unreasonable request.

I hope this helps, best of luck 🙂
