Retaking a levels

Im think of retaking my alevels i got CCD and my firm choice was A*AA Arts and science at UCL during my 2 years my grades ranged from A*-B, so when I received my grades I was shocked, I plan on doing environmental science undergraduate and then doing environmental law in law school. I received offers from holloway and birbeck but I just not happy with it. If I retake how badly would it effect my application especially if I want to apply internationally. I also revived an A for my geography coursework which can be carried over if I retake. I had issues during the beginning of my exams, after half term when my issues subsided my marks on my papers where significantly better. It would be nice to here from anyone who has retaken and how its been applying to universitys after.

Hi Nadia,

Firstly, don't panic. This is by no means the end of your journey, and you can absolutely get to where you want to be.

If you do not think you would be happy with RH or Birbeck, then there is no harm in resitting - the great majority of unis will not think badly of this at all and will treat your application anew. If you are applying as an international student or a home student makes no difference as to how you will be perceived and resits are usually fine for both.

You also have the advantage that Environmental Science is not a hyper-competitive course (unlike things like Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering that is!) and so even if you do not quite achieve the grades required for your offers there is a chance you may still be accepted.

I hope this helps and reassures you - let us know if you have any questions 🙂

Hi Nadia! (:

As Bath uni were mentioning, theres no harm in retaking, if theres any particular places your really wanting to go i'd send there admissions email (usually displayed on website) a wee mesage just to confirm that they accept retakes, i wouldnt expect this to be an issue but if you say to them you can just confirm that this is the case!

also just wanted to mention, please do make the unis aware of any personal circumstances/ issues that might have affected results!! - unis can take this into account and you may qualify for minimum or adjusted requirements (depending on circumstances) - As you are mentioning issues affecting results its worth making unis aware of this being the case 😊

best of luck!! <33

Hi @Nadia2007,

If you don't feel like studying Environment Science at Birbeck or Royal Holloway is the right path for you, it's perfectly okay to take a year out to focus on resitting your A-Levels. As mentioned above, most universities don't mind if students resit their A-Levels and it won't affect your application negatively - after all, we all know that unexpected personal circumstances can arise and affect overall grades.

The fact you regularly achieved grades in the range of A*-B and received an offer of A*AA from UCL highlights that you're a diligent student. Taking the time to resit rather than rushing into a course you're not entirely sure about will hopefully put you on the path you want to be on soon. 🙂

Hope this helps,
Eve (Kingston Rep).
