Worth Reapplying to Oxford?

Hello, last year I applied to Oxford for Psychology and Philosophy, and i got an interview but eventually got rejected.

I just got my A level results back, and would like to know if its worth reapplying
- Psychology: A*
- Philosophy: A
- Maths: A

The reason i ask is because my GCSE results were quite poor compared to other oxbridge candidates, and i believe this could have had a strong influence on my rejection (obviously there's the interview as well). I was wondering if anybody knew if the fact that i would be applying having already achieved my A level grades would decrease the importance placed on GCSE grades.

My GCSE grades:
- English lit: 9
- English lang: 7
- Maths: 8
- Physics: 8
- Chemistry: 8
- Biology: 8
- Economics: 8
- Music: 7
- Geography: 5
- Mandarin: 5

Additionally, last year i got 76/100 on the TSA, and i'm confident i could achieve a similar result this year.

Basically, i'm asking if my GCSEs will make it practically impossible to get in; obviously there are other factors like personal statement and interview, but i wanna know if my GCSEs will be a clear limiting factor.

Cheers luv

Doesn’t sound like your gcse’s were the issue since you got to the interview stage. Oxford interviews a smaller proportion of applicants than Cambridge so they saw you as a credible candidate and 76 is a very strong TSA score.

It sounds like you aren’t sure why you were rejected and didn’t get feedback at the time(?) so the first thing to do is submit a ‘Subject Access Request’ to your college and they will have to provide your file that shows the scores attributed to each aspect and the associated comments. This will give you a clear view on why the decision was made. Your application is strengthened by having achieved grades now but be sure to apply to a different college and have fresh eyes assessing your application.

Good luck whatever you decide to do!

As above if you were invited to interview then you were considered a potentially "offerable" candidate so I doubt GCSEs were an issue at least in a vacuum. I suspect it would've been more the interview itself that you may not have scored as well in as other candidates or been borderline and that combined with other factors led to you not getting an offer.

So on the surface of it I don't se any reason you couldn't conceivably reapply. That said, do consider what your aim is for a degree and what offer(s) you currently hold - will going to Oxford make a difference in you being able to achieve those goals? For example if your goal is to become a clinical psychologist, provided your degree is BPS accredited it's really immaterial which university you go to (and arguably, a more clinically focused course may be more useful for your own sake than a much more experimentally oriented course like Oxford)!

OP There is a window during which time you can ask for feedback, but I'm afraid that passed a while ago.

yeah no i did get feedback at the time and definitely performed quite poorly in the interviews (2/5, 3/5, 3/5). I just thought that on top of this GCSEs may have been, or would be, a limiting factor. Thanks for your help guys.

yeah the 2 will do it for you but that’s something that can be developed and improved with the right support. There’s lots of support available that can help with this for you if it’s what you really want.

Did you practice "THINKING ALOUD?" 🙂 Because the tutor(s) are looking for how you think and solve questions.

Where have you been accepted for 2025/6. I honestly don;t thik this is worth a shot given your interview scores.

You were given an interview with them knowing your GCSE scores, so I think your GCSE scores weren't an issue. During the interview, the tutors look for a person they would enjoy talking with in tutorials
