Chem eng economics or pharmacy

Hello! I applied for pharmacy for university but my dad is really insistent on me applying for either chem eng or economics and finance. I have no interest in doing either of these because I'm more interested in chemistry and biology. My dad says there's no hope for pharmacy in the future but is that true? He says the job is more important so if i do a degree like chem eng or economics my life will be smooth sailing rather than doing a "good for nothing" course like pharmacy

Hi @kkazutora 👋

I'm sorry to hear that you're in a tough dilemma at the moment. It's completely valid to feel conflicted when family expectations clash with your own interests.

Pharmacy is still a respected and important profession, and while the job market has its challenges (like many fields), it absolutely isn’t a “good for nothing” degree. If you’re passionate about chemistry and biology, pharmacy builds directly on those strengths and many students go on to have meaningful, stable careers in healthcare, research, or industry.

It’s also worth remembering that no degree guarantees a smooth path success tends to come from engaging with something you genuinely care about and putting in the effort over time... you’re far more likely to thrive in a subject you’re interested in than in one chosen out of pressure.

Maybe try having an open conversation with your dad, explaining why pharmacy appeals to you and what the career paths can look like. It’s your future, and choosing something that motivates you is key to making the most of your time at uni.

Maybe also write down some pros and cons so that you can understand the full picture before making your choice - don't rush your decision!

Wishing you all the best with whatever you decide let me know if I can offer any further advice 😊
