I’m stuck on what to do because i failed my A level mocks

I am a student who takes maths economics and psychology for A levels. For my end of year mocks in year 12 i got DDU and the U was in maths. I aspire to have. a job either in finance or law but maths would still be good because i am unsure what i want to do. My sixthform has offered me these options:
- Continue to year 13 with 2 A levels (economics and psychology) and take maths privately
- retake the year with whole different subjects
- leave the sixthform and go to another in which means restarting
I am currently leaning to the idea of doing year 2 maths privately with a tutor but i’m really stuck because i know i could
do better if i got another chance.
Please if there are any advice you can give me please do.

Hey @zakoud,

If you're interested in pursuing law at university, it might be worthwhile to consider retaking the year with different subjects. Law courses at university don't tend to have specific subject requirements (albeit an essay subject is sometimes advantageous) and instead focus on grades. However, I understand this option might not be ideal if you're considering studying Finance at university, as ideally you'd like to study A-Level Economics and A-Level Maths.

Studying Maths privately can be costly, but if you're willing to put in the work and think having a private tutor could help improve the areas you struggle most in with the subject, it could definitely be worth it! Do you know if your sixth form would allow you to sit your Maths exams with them, or would you have to find a private exam centre?

Don't be disheartened by your grades; A-Levels are challenging, and it can take time for students to adapt to the new structure and content. The important thing is that you keep trying! 🙂

Best of luck,
Eve (Kingston Rep).

thank you so much for your reply!
For the law thing it’s a suggestion because i am still debating. I am unsure on what i want to do but i do want to fall in the corporate side.
As for the maths i do it with my sixthform it’s just im prohibited from entering any lessons and i pay for my exams.
Many thanks

If the U on that maths mock is at all reflective of your actual skill in the subject, you probably shouldn't continue it. Year 2 content is generally harder than year 1 anyway, and it assumes you have a very strong foundation, which you just don't have. If you're on a U now, cramming the whole A-Level into a single year is very unlikely to be a good idea. If you did well on maths at GCSE, and did better on school tests and the mock just went catastrophically wrong, then you could do it, but at least consider other subjects or pathways you might be better at.

i believe that the reason for my fails was not my intellectual ability but my lack of effort and not knowing how to revise. I started late and now i’m paying the price for it but i think that if i start early this year it would be better.
What do you think?

I can't say for sure what you should do, you have all the information and it's your decision to make. But tbh revising for maths at least is basically just a cycle of:
(do practice questions -> study up on topics you lose marks on -> do harder practice questions)
Which is pretty much how you'd measure your raw ability in the subject too.
