Cambridge Maths

Hi, I’m going into Y13 and would like to know if it’s even worth applying to Cambridge for Maths with my stats:

GCSEs: 99999987+L2D, 8 in maths A levels: Maths, Fm, Physics 3A* predicted. Doing an EPQ next year.

No olympiads, apart from Girls’ One where although getting the best score in year I recieved a Merit. contextual if that even helps

The things I’m particularly worried about are not having done any olympiads like BMO, only doing 3 A levels and the 8 in GCSE maths.
Thank you
You exceed the requirements so I don't see any reason you couldn't. I wouldn't bother with Trinity for the reasons repeatedly advised on here, but any other college I imagine you would be a competitive applicant for.

Hi there, I would absolutely recommend applying. You meet and exceed all the criteria and I think you have a really solid chance. Besides, you won’t know if you don’t apply.
In terms of your lack of competitions I wouldn’t worry too much - if there is time to do some before the applications are due I would recommend but you will be able to focus on other things in your personal statement.
Another quick piece of advice is to really tailor your personal statement to Oxbridge - as often these universities care far more about your interest and dedication to the subject than extracurricular activities which aren’t related to the course - so I would look for advice on how to write you personal statement with this course in mind.
Good luck!

Even though I got an 8 in maths? Thats the thing that’s bothering me the most from my list of concerns

I don’t know, I just wanna see what my chances of obtaining an interview are when there’s like IMO medalists and BMO people applying for the same course.

I know multiple people irl who got into Cambridge maths without even qualifying for BMO1 in year 13, never mind getting medals in year 12. Also from what I've heard, the maths course isn't at all like olympiads; olympiads are their own thing entirely. If you do well on olympiads that means you enjoy them, which not all mathmos do, and you probably prepared for years, which not even close to all mathmos did. The number of IMO and top BMO2 people you're competing with is negligible and you should spend more time preparing for interview and STEP atp anyway.

I see, thank you!

What STEP prep have you done already?

Yes the grade 8 is a concern - all the applicants I've supported recently have had 9s.

What do your teachers think?

STEP foundation modules, working through siklos book atm and will also start the STEP 2 modules very soon & also past papers. Ive managed to self study all of A2 maths aswell.
I haven’t talked to my teachers specifically about Oxbridge but my teacher told my parents i have a good shot, i reckon because i managed to achieve 95% in normal maths and 97% for further maths in my end of year exams. hopefully this makes up for the 8 despite being around 7 marks off a 9.

Are you taking Edexcel?

Will your teachers support you in STEP and interview prep?

No, AQA although we use edexcel resources all time. I have been told if I get an interview they will give me a mock beforehand. Probably nothing more than that but I reckon I will be fine doing and talking through problems by myself. As for STEP, i don’t think they have much experience, but again I can manage by myself or hope to do so anyways

Presumably you've discovered Dr Frost?

There's this: https://www.drfrost.org/downloadables.php?rid=159

and https://www.drfrost.org/page.php?id=7

He also has AQA resources linked on this page: https://www.drfrost.org/browse-courses.php
