Torn between urbanism vs architecture

Hiya I'm really stuck.

Im going into Y12 in september, currently planning to do Geography & Politics (which I'm set on) and History (which im still debating taking) - the whole intention of this is to pursue a degree in urbanism such as at UCL, Manchester inter alia.

But I've been haunted by this FOMO ghoul of architecture, which I had always planned on doing until maybe last year - my overarching passion lies primarily in beauty and architectural revival, particularly in heritage urbanism and a desire to bring fundamental change, such as in the manner thinkers like Leon Krier envisioned - a UK enriched with italian/Lucchese urban styles - .

And I just feel this role I want to fufill would be better served in a career in architecture instead of the more technical urban planning.

Thus im considering swapping History a level for 3D design or graphic design (I'm predicted a 6/7 in art) and potentially go down the architecture pathway- despite its higher competitiveness with my backfoot without a STEM or fine art a level.

Can anybody help me? Should I pursue an architecture degree instead? Do I even need to swap History? Thanks a lot.

It takes 7 years to qualify as an architect and it is now a relatively poorly paid profession. There is currently a shortage of town planners. :yep:

Well considering it takes 2 years to complete a levels and a further 4 years at uni, I don’t think anyone can predict what the outlook of either career will look like in 2031 surely haha

Architecture pay has been declining for several years - it's an ongoing trend. Plus many students struggle to find part 1 placements that ideally should take place between the undergrad and masters - again that is an ongoing issue. Currently, there is an over supply of architecture grads for the available jobs and I don't see that improving any time soon, especially as the use of AI increases across industries.
