is the uni of manchester good for dentistry?

i’ve heard a LOT of mixed reviews about it, but i was wondering if there’s any dental students on here from the uni itself to possibly give their opinion on the uni?

Thing about dentistry is you have to apply strategically. If you want to study dentistry you need to look at your stats and work out which dental schools would give you the best possible chance of an offer. And if that's Manchester, that's Manchester.

Look at the GDC Inspection report for 2023 and 2024. Lots of standards only partly met following emergency inspection in 2023. Student satisfaction really low still as well which may have triggered the inspection. Something weird going on between 2021-2025 As previous inspection in 2019 and covid one in 2021 were fine and standards were all met. Sorry bit late to respond to your initial question, I know, but only just found this thread and been doing some research myself on what a dental student friend told me. Something about fifth years not having done enough clinical procedures (root canals) to be signed off. On the report it says 2024 dental students will be signed off but that for future cohorts cannot be guranteed unless things improve/clinical experiences better evidenced/supervised. Something to do with poor staff/student ratios in clinic and lower than desireable clinical experience/practises. Bit concerning for those who've applied and are there already.

Sorry to hear that and thanks for replying. what year are you in? Can you be any more specific as just got an interview there and was really excited but now you've confirmed my suspicions am worried if its my only one. Might not have applied if had found this out before the application deadline, but it was one of the Uni's for dentistry that best fit my stats for chance of an interview. Be interested to hear whats going on and how quickly you think it might start improving. Why has it been allowed to get so bad?

hii, well done on getting an interview!! theres a lot but one thing is that they still are advertising that we get early clinical experience?? theyve STILL got it on their page that you get early experience from 1st year which is simply not true. im p sure theyre referring to a literal tiny kit we got and thats it. pre covid it used to be a lot better but they still havent updated it to show the truth. we actually only start phantom heads in 2nd year, and only see patients in 3rd year and its been this way since covid. they are slowly getting 2nd years back to seeing patients though, but theres still no need for the false advertising lmao. and like u said about the gdc report, its honestly concerning. i think they have a few months to improve everything before the gdc comes back to review it.
another thing is theres a lack of staff when were treating patients, we literally have one tutor for a large group and just a lack of clinical activity at all because of this it really takes ages for anything to get done.
however they are being forced to change things and because youd only start 1st year in 2026, i think it wont be as bad for you as it was for 5th years before and now as hopefully a lot will be different

Thanks so much for your reply - thats not good though.
Hopefully it will start improving, but still hard to see why it has been allowed to get like that. Other Uni's seem to have been able to return to pre covid clinical experience etc and have good student satisfaction rates. Can you see them being able to turn it around?

yeah we have complained abt this cos why is it thatother uni have been able to bounce back but wehaven’t? i think it’s a disconnect between the nhs and the actual dental school, and the nhs don’t have much control over it. but i do think they can definitely change it since we used to be actually good precovid. if they actually implement what they keep saying they will , then yeah. i think they just need to hire way more staff. but they seem to only care about money which is why i think it is the way it is, and also international students have definitely got special treatment in the past regarding exams and attendance bc of the ££

Thanks so much for your reply. I don't have my interview until February and am hoping I get some from other Uni's (but as I'm sure you know no guarantees there - was really happy to get one tbh) especially now I know this but would it be ok if I messaged again before having to make any big decisions to see if it has improved or if there has been another inspection and how its gone. I hope it improves for all students there already too! At least the GDC has taken note and stepped in now, you would think they have to now make improvements; but as long as they make long term investment/improvements not just to pass and then let it all vanish.
