Council Tax

I'm in 1st year applying for halls at my uni. Do I need to file for a council tax exemption to my local council i.e. where I live now at home or to the council my uni and accommodation is?

Hi there!

You'd need to apply for an exemption with the local council where your university is located.

To find out if your university registers an exemption for you, you'd need to reach out to your university's accommodation team. Some universities will file the exemption for you if you live in halls of residence, but if you're in private accommodation, you'd almost always need to register this yourself. Our university has an online portal where you can automatically generate an exemption letter to send over to the council, but your university's system might be different, so definitely check to be safe!
