Is Uni of York very middle class?

I went to an offer holder day for English at UoY and found most students seemed to be middle class southerners.

Is this a fair assessment? I’m a working class northerner and I’m worried I’ll feel out of place

Hello!

Congratulations on your offer to study at York! 🎉

I'm from Manchester, and I studied Biology at York between 2018 and 2022, personally I found that there were a lot of different people at the University and I found it easy to meet and make new friends. In my flat, there were 10 of us, and we were each from different places in the UK and had slightly different backgrounds, and my flat is where I met one of my closest friends.

I hope this helps to reassure you! Do you have any other questions about studying at York?
Hannah 😀

Hey so I am a current student at York. There are quite a bit of southerners so I think that’s fair. But I found there was more working class northerners at the uni that I’ve interacted with than southerners I guess but that’s just my course. You’ll find at any uni there will be a fair mix of north, south and international students and they have financial struggles.

setting aside the (apparent) prejudice and your (possible) resistance to mixing with folks from a wide range of backgrounds (which IMO is part of the reason to go to a good Uni like York) . . .

IME Uni of York is a large, diverse and tolerant place. There will be plenty of people you will be able to relate to and I can't imagine you will feel out of place there

Maybe don’t jump to conclusions. I was worried about it being so majorly middle class that I’d feel out of place. What an odd, patronising response 😀
