Good afternoon,

There is an ambassador scheme at the University of Reading where prospective students can message current students; you can find more information here. There is an MPharm student with a preparatory year here.

Safa will be able to answer your questions and help you understand what the preparatory year entails. I recommend you message Safa and ask her any questions you have.

I hope this is helpful and you are able to get a great answer from Safa.

All the best,
Ella

Hi there! I hope you have been well.
My name is Safa, and I have recently completed my foundation year in Pharmacy at the University of Reading.
First of all, I’m glad to hear you are considering Reading University as one of your options, and second, I hope I was able to answer your question on Unibuddy well
I want to also answer your questions here on TSR just so that it’s easier to find for others who have similar questions.

My experience
I think foundation year was great! It made me feel more prepared for uni because I got the chance to get used to the campus and life at university, and made a bunch of friends in my course so I won’t really be that nervous about making friends.
In my opinion, the content for the biology and chemistry modules in foundation year was very similar to A-levels, so I already knew most of the stuff. However, the exams weren’t as stressful as A-Levels because, while A-Levels depend on grade boundaries which change every year, uni does not. So it was literally just like “you need to get 60% overall and xx% in these modules/exams to pass to year one”, so I felt a lot more confident. And my favourite thing about prep year was the two other modules; Foundation in Pharmaceutical and Health Sciences - which would give us a little head start in year one because we already learnt some stuff about different medications and a lot of pharmaceutical calculation methods, Foundation in Academic skills (which I’m quite sure every single foundation year student no matter your course does) - taught about referencing at uni, using AI ethically, how to write reflections, presentation skills etc. I found that module extremely beneficial.

Time tables
Would say it’s different for different students, but for me, I was usually in for 3 days a week, and 4 days if I had a practical. I would say I had a lot of free time during my weeks.

Placements
We don’t have any placements during foundation year, but they do start in year 1.
You can find more information about placements here

I hope my answers were helpful!
Please feel free to ask any further questions here on TSR or on Unibuddy, and I’d be happy to help to the best of my ability InshaAllah

Sincerely,
Safa
