Experiences of Biomedical Science Undergrad?

Hiya 😊

Could people please share their experiences of biomedical science undergrad/what uni they were at, especially if you studied/are studying at Uni of Essex or a university in London.

I'm especially interested in knowing how many hours/days per week you have to do. I have started contacting some unis about this as not all of them state it on their website. I have some health conditions that make long hours/days hard for me, so I'm hoping there's some unis out there that are only a few days a week?

Thank you!
I did first year biology at a different university, which in some ways is different but I did most of the same modules as the biomedical science students. In terms of hours it varied massively day to day and week to week (I think that was a quirk of my university specifically). I was at the University of Sussex and in first semester I only had around 8 hours a week with no more than around 4 hours a day (it was actually mostly pushed Monday to Wednesday) and second semester I had usually two lectures a day ish but a couple of times I had around 6 contact hours in a day.

As stated above (although I did Biomedical Science at an IBMS accreited uni (vital if you want to work in diagnostics)), hours will vary WILDLY.

I remember during first year (or second year, was a while back), I had lectures from 9-12, a three hour break in the middle and then another 3 hours from 3-6. Luckily at the time I lived within a 20 minute walk from campus. So I could if I wanted to go back to my place and chill for a couple of hours (or do some coursework between lectures). That being said, on some days, I would sometimes do as little as two hours (a practical)

So, I'm sorry to say it will vary WILDLY from uni to uni (I studied at UWE in Bristol).

It will also depend entirely on what modules you take. Clin Chem was the ones which ended fairly late as they got the short end of the stick as to when your lectures were done (I think haem got a 12-3 lecture or something) and then chemistry walked in for what was left of the day.

Hi @Franxcesca

At the University of Essex 🏢 you can see the content of the course on our website💻️ here: https://www.essex.ac.uk/courses/ug00039/1/bsc-biomedical-science , if you scroll down to course structure you can see the modules you may find yourself studying. This may help you understand the work load.

Your timetable will have a mixture of lectures, seminars and lab work. However if you would like to know our students personal experiences you can reach out to our current students on the Unibuddy platform where you can message them 👋📱💻️ https://www.essex.ac.uk/life/chat

We hope this help and you find the answers you are looking for!
Good luck with your studies & we hope to see you on our campus! 📚️

Hi!
The best person to ask for advice is probably a course rep at your university. Or maybe email the module leader. We can make guesses but don’t know for sure.

In Kingston my uni I have classes five days a week, usually I get Wednesday afternoon off but we usually have at least one or two 2-hour lectures a day, sometimes three or four. On lab days we spend 3-4 hours on one experiment.
Best, Maddie (Kingston Rep)
