Uni options for economics related courses

Hi,
My predicted grades are A* economics, A maths and an A in geography. I also got an A in my EPQ (Economics and Sustainability related topic). I was looking to apply to the following courses however I’m not sure whether they’re too aspirational. I’m also not sure whether that with the courses I’ve picked it may be hard to write a good personal statement due to the slightly different subject matters. Also might be worth noting I can get slightly reduced grades at Nottingham Uni due to competing for GB in sport at an international level- not sure whether other top unis offer this.

Here are the courses I was thinking of applying for:
Geography with Economics LSE (AAA)
Economics Nottingham (AAA)
PPE Oxford (AAA)
PPE Warwick (A*AA)
Economics and management Kings (A*AA)

Any advice would be much appreciated thank you.

I would probably try and pick at least one university with lower entry requirements just in case. I think it would be possible to write a personal statement because the overarching theme will be economics, you can add a little bit about geography which also links reasonably well to politics. I hope this helps.

Hi there!

First off, wow! Those predicted grades are really impressive, and your EPQ sounds brilliant. It’s clear you’ve got a lot going for you, both academically and in sport, so well done! 🎉

A few thoughts on your questions:

1. Courses and ambition:

Your grades put you in a strong position for all the courses you’re looking at, though Oxbridge and LSE are super competitive. That said, having top grades, an EPQ, and international sport experience definitely helps you stand out.

Nottingham, Warwick, and Kings are also excellent choices, all strong programs with great opportunities, so you’re building a balanced list.

2. Personal statement:

Even with slightly different subjects, you can absolutely make a strong, coherent statement. Focus on themes that run through all your interests: analytical skills, problem-solving, research (like your EPQ), and your sport achievements.

For example, your EPQ on Economics and Sustainability links nicely to Economics, PPE, and Geography with Economics. Think about the skills and passions that tie all your subjects together rather than seeing them as separate.

3. Sport and context:

Competing internationally is amazing! Nottingham and many other universities will consider exceptional circumstances like this when reviewing applications. Definitely make sure it’s highlighted in your reference or UCAS form.

4. Strategy:

You’ve got a great mix of aspirational and target choices. Just make sure your personal statement is clear, passionate, and highlights your achievements. Admissions tutors love to see evidence of both academic and extracurricular strengths.

Overall, you’re in a really strong position! Focus on connecting your experiences, showing your enthusiasm, and letting your personality shine through in your statement. You’ve got this! 💪

What Unis with lower entry requirements would you recommend for economics related courses?

I don't know anything about economics specifically, and it is research you will have to do yourself because only you know what courses will work best for you. The UCAS website is often a good place to start and you should try and go to open days if possible.

Is there a reason you're applying for different courses? Why not PPE at all of them so you can write a good personal statement?

Hi! The first thing you need to do is read all about the courses at the different universities to see which has the content you feel you would enjoy the most. You have already established that you have the predicted grades to apply, so no, they are not too aspirational - you can do it! It really boils down to what you want to do. You then need to look at what the universities have to offer - make a checklist prioritising what is important to you and as you narrow this list down, book to attend open days at the universities that interest you the most. As for the personal statement, it is most likely you will need this for any applications, not just the courses you are looking at, so simply give it your best shot, - your personal statement is your chance to shine!! Hope this helps! 🙂 Official Rep, Karen
