Anyone doing English & History? Have received nothing from History Dept, lots from English. Someone on Facebook said they had an email from History saying not to choose modules on Banner on 1st but to wait until the 3rd. I've received nothing at all.

For the first year core module 'HIST1702: Making History' any idea how many of the detailed strands we chose?

Thanks, hopefully we'll get more course details this week.

One thing that strikes me about Durham's BA History course is the lack of structure.

I know Durham stresses that the degree is geographically and chronologically diverse. But when compared to other universities the modules offered seem incredibly random and obscure with no obvious pattern or thread.

Have you still received nothing from History? Daughter wants to choose her English modules today (as advised by the English dept) but she can't unless she also chooses her History modules - and the Banner page says not to submit module choices until you hear from History dept. Which we haven't!

huh, that's funny, the freedom of choice in the course is exactly why I went for Durham. I don't really agree with you that the modules are "random and obscure" - I feel that the list system prevents you from doing too many modules in the same era of history, though I expected there to be a more concrete "one medieval, one early modern and one modern" rule, and I'd say the content is only really obscure since many of us in Britain only really get taught about the Tudors, the world wars and little else at school (though I don't know your situation). I'm very excited by all the Asian and African history modules available! But hey, everyone likes different things. My insurance choice was York, and I was feeling a little iffy about that because they only give first-years one optional module...

that's odd, I got my details several weeks ago now. maybe they're doing it in batches and you're just in one of the later groups? perhaps you should email admissions??

I got a letter emailed to me on Thursday with a lot of links - SharePoint, LearnUltra/Blackboard (WHY THE HELL DOES IT HAVE 2 NAMES?? WHAT'S THE POINT?? anyway) and dates and locations of compulsory talks during fresher's week. Has your daughter started the Transition to HE course on LearnUltra yet? (should be linked somewhere on the university website) If so, the course "History Induction" may also be available to her, which contains info on the History modules.

Nope, didn't receive anything from History on Thursday. She's read up on the modules and knows what she wants to do, but when she went to Banner (another odd name) and inputted them it clearly said not to send if she hadn't heard from the dept. So the English Dept (who have been super efficient) want the students to choose their modules today but the History Dept is nowhere to be seen. Odd. She emailed them on Friday but hasn't heard anything. When are you going to choose your history modules? Which, to be fair, look fascinating.

Probably in a day or two, I still need to read up on a few options (including the Making History strands). In the stuff the History Department sent me, it seemed to say that for their module selection they have separate Microsoft Forms (depending on course, so your daughter won't do the same one as me) which open on the 2nd or 3rd, then they automatically update your Banner account. I've still got a few issues I need to figure out though, since I want to take a language module from the Centre for Foreign Language Studies, so I'm planning to email them to ask what I need to do in terms of where and when I indicate my desire to take that module.

Yay, she finally got an email from the History dept, explaining how they don't use Banner to input modules but to use Sharepoint from Wednesday. A version of the email you got last week, I guess. And relax!

Do you know your college? I don't think the academic stuff kicks in until you do.
