UCAT worries

Hi all,
I am a yr12 student about to start yr13 and have been spending the vast majority of the summer so far revising for the UCAT. My exam is scheduled for this Thursday, and while recent results have been overwhelmingly positive (over the last week my mock scores have been steadily increasing from around 2070-2410, the latter of which I achieved in the official mock B yesterday), today I have had mixed results from my mocks. I started my day with the official mock C from the UCAT website, but found the site to be increasingly glitchy. Every 7-8 minutes or so when completing my mock, the screen would freeze and the website would stop responding; the only way to alleviate this problem was to wait for the website to fix itself, which would usually take between 3-4 minutes. This really stressed me out while I was completing the mock, and I ended up with a score of around 2130 (88th percentile). While I was not unhappy, I am aiming for around 2250+ in the real thing (in order to keep med schools such as Bristol accessible) so I wanted to try another mock in order to do try and reach the 90th percentile. Unfortunately, upon completing my second mock of the day on medify (which I started at around 3pm, which is the same time as my real exam), I did significantly worse, with a final score of only 2020 (75th percentile). I feel very shaken as I have not received such a low score in many weeks, and I am worried as my exam is on Thursday. Is it still feasible to aim for 2250+, as I have achieved this score previously?? Should I move my exam back? Any help would be v much appreciated xxx

I’m in the exact same boat. On medify I am probably averaging around 2000 but with Official Mocks, I’m ranging from 2200 to 2400.

Medify is so much harder but I’m stressing because exams on Wednesday, it might be worthwhile to postpone it but I’m going on holiday so don’t want to lose the rhythm.

I’m confused as to whether I’m actually good enough to sit the test or not because of the mixed test scores :frown:

Go take yourself out for a nice day trip etc, have fun, most people do better in the exam then the mocks. Then decide if you will cancel and pay for a different date.

Hi,
I did the UCAT this year and it was considerably easier than the medify mocks, especially for QR, I would recommend just keeping the day as pushing it back may stress you even more.

Thank you so much for asking- I ended up getting 2490! Obviously very very pleased xxx this experience has taught me that the UCAT is more about attitude on the test day compared to being 100% confident in the amount of prep you've done.

OMG WELL DONE ! that’s bloody brilliant you should be so proud  is there anything niche or specific that you did to help you or was it just normal revision techniques? also what kind of attitude/mindset helped you? xx

Thank you!!! I think it was mostly normal revision methods: I used both medify and medentry just to see what the differences were between the two platforms but honestly I don't think its necessary to have both (they're very similar...). I also did all four of the official UCAT mocks; honestly looking back I'm glad I did them even though the website lagging stressed me out during the time. The only thing to keep in mind with the UCAT mocks is that there aren't any partial marks given for SJT or DM, so I mostly ignored my SJT scores on those.
I didn't do anything particularly niche to prepare: the only thing I think is really important to do is to taper down your revision in the last week or so before the test, and I would say not to do a full mock the day before your exam (since it would've just stressed me out if I underperformed at all).
I think in terms of attitude on the actual test day, you need remind yourself that this could be the last ever UCAT full exam you have to do, so it's important to give it your all. I'd been really impressed by Bristol med school when I'd gone to the open day, so that was what I was vaguely aiming to apply to but I tried not to focus on specific UCAT cutoffs and marks I was aiming for on actual test day.
Personally I had a really positive experience at my testing centre (the invigilator was on top of it and we were all given earplugs plus headphones to block out noise so you could literally hear NOTHING) which I think also helped since I was nervous that something could've gone wrong with the actual technology.
Best of luck with your exam as well x
