Gateway To Medicine/and SQA appeals

Im an S6 student very passionate about medicine, specifically psychiatry, and I’m currently preparing university applications. In S4 I sat my national 5s and my grades where good I got 7As, however, in S5 due to certain unfortunate circumstances my grades have now slipped and on results day I got 2As in higher English and geography and B in biology and 2Cs in higher maths and chemistry. These grades were not expected and have been very disappointing. I know I can no longer apply to medicine the traditional way, so I’ve been contacting universities I have hoping to apply to about foundation years or gateway programmes I can apply to as I am eligible for them due the area I live in and asking if they have any advice for me to remedy my grades. In terms of eligibility, bcz of the area I live in im in SMID 1.

And as for my subjects, since I did better on higher biology, while my grade is a B my score was 70% so I'm processing an appeal, my teachers have been encouraging me to do advanced biology instead of chemistry to ensure I get the get grade possible. Alongside that I'm also doing advanced higher English, higher modern studies and higher psychology. And I'm hoping to get the best scores possible in these subjects as they are all things I'm very interested in and believe I can get the best grades possible in. I'm looking towards applying to Dundee, Aberdeen and Glasgows gateway programmes as they are close to where I live and are universities I'd really like to get into even though I know my grades aren't great. I called the university of Dundee earlier this morning and they told me all I need is to do well in my advanced Highers, Aberdeen said the same, I just need a B. Would it be okay if I focused kn the subject's I have now that I know I cna do very well in or for the sake of getting into the gateway 2 medicine should I change to more science heavy subjects? This year hasn't been very good for me mentally as well as psychically so I tried to play to my strengths when picking subjects but after doing some research I think I need to do more.

While it might be hard, I dont mind doing 2 AH and a three highers (resiting higher chemistry) or changing advanced biology to chemistry. But that might make it harder to get the B I need. I'm really scared and confused on what to do, my back up option are law (that's why I'm doing modern studies and one of the reaosns im doing AH english) and psychology. I know how different theses courses are to each other so medicine is mainly goal, I'm just wondering if anyone who's in the gateway or working towards it that may have been in a similar boat to me have any advice, I'm emailing universities but i think it would be beneficial to get an insider perspective or find people like me that for some reassurance. Are there any extra classes, summer school opportunities that I could take to add to my personal statement that might be useful? If my appeal goes through and I get the A in higher biology (hopefully 🙏) taking me to 3 As would this help me in looking for gateway opportunities as well?

Thank you !!!

Since you are resitting Higher chemistry, I suggest that you take AH biology, and take any other subjects you are strong in. And also if you take AH Biology, do an assignment that you have interest in, lots of imformation and the one you can manipulate. Best of luck!!!

Thank you for you're reply! Yes for my AH biology project I was thinking of doing something photosynthesis/climate change related beacause there both topics I'm really intrested in. And yeah resiting higher chemistry will definitely be beneficial, although it may mean having to drop modern studies 🥲 which is fine I guess, since that was just a back up incase I decided to do law. I'll try see if I can resit higher chemistry instead of taking advanced higher chemistry (my school can be iffy about this stuff, especially if you already passed) maybe I can study for higher chemistry independently since I already did it anyways and hopefully this will better my chances for Gateway2Medicine?

Again thank you
