Hi all,
I have just got my GCSE results and am in the process of deciding and solidifying my a level options. I have currently chosen BTEC business, a level history and biology, as well as level 3 core maths. However, I am considering changing from biology to geography. I first chose biology for a few reasons:
1) It is well respected and I really want my options to be as open as possible as I don't know what career I want to go into (though I do doubt it will be something science related).
2) I enjoy science and didn't want to leave it behind yet.
3) It wasn't solely essay based and that appealed to me as I felt run down by essays during GCSEs at the time when I chose.
However, since doing my GCSEs and reflecting I have realised just how stressed and panicked I was during the entirety of not just the exam period but also the long period running up to it, and research has revealed just how difficult a level biology is and now I am extremely worried it would be too much for me and if it would be even worth the breakdowns and stress to not even go into a science related career...as far as I know anyway. The only other subject I take a liking to is geography, however I did not do it at GCSE and feel this may disadvantage me, and am also a bit worried about essay technique (although I did get an 8 in GCSE history), although I am willing to work hard and put in the practise. Also, I am very slow at writing, so much so that even extra time isn't quite enough time for me unfortunately but I'm hoping this is something I can improve myself. Despite all this, I do find Geography interesting and feel it could give me a good direction for business/marketing/events roles which I think I would be more interested in than science careers.
edit: for reference I got a 7 in biology and experienced lots of stress during the exams which also put me off.
Please let me know if you have any advice, or how you found a level biology or geography. I want to keep my options following sixth form as broad and impressive as possible without sacrificing my wellbeing to a great amount and achieve top grades if possible. Would these options be able to give me that?

You can absolutely do Geography without doing GCSE (I know someone who did, and she was really good at it). You will have loads of time to work on your essay technique, so please do not worry about that now. What do you want to do once you leave sixth form?

Hi all, I've just finished my GCSE with mixed grades between 5s in maths/ English Language which is 2 marks from 6 and 6s in science. I am choosing Bio/Chem and psychology for my Alevel.
I am a hard worker and I want to study Pharmacy at Uni. Is there any success experiences that you were in the same boat and achieved A* / As or Bs please.
I want to be optimistic and I don't know where to start with. Thank you.

Thank you so much, this was very reassuring - at the moment I am not entirely sure, I am likely to go to university but this is not 100% or anything, if i do it would probably be for a business related course or something along those lines.

Hi, I'm in Year 11 and choosing my A-levels at the moment.

My school requires us to do 4 A-levels and I was thinking about these subjects: Maths, English, Chemistry, Physics. I'm aware that this is an insanely hard combination if I want to get all A/A*s (which is my goal). I'm currently predicted all 9s in my 11 GCSEs at school and have already done 2 extra language GCSEs, which I got 9s in.

How possible do you think it would be for me to achieve my goal with the above A-levels? Alternatively, I was thinking of swapping out Physics for Latin (I'm better at it but enjoy it slightly less), would this help?

Thanks!

If I'm being brutally honest, I can't tell you whether you can succeed because I don't know you at all. Given you seem to be achieving well it should be possible and you seem to want to do it. Enjoyment is very important at A-level so you definitely need to consider that.

What are you hoping to do after sixth form, if you don't mind me asking?

Hi, thanks so much for your response. I'm hoping to go straight into a law degree. I've been told that for this I should just focus on getting A/A*s with at least one essay subject (so picking my strongest subjects would be the best strategy).
