Hey guys

I've got offers to both unis, and at the moment I'd prefer to go to Bristol. Mainly because Warwick seems quite boring, as it's kinda in the middle of nowhere. However, Warwick has a more prestigious course...

The question is, WHICH ONE??!

I loved Bristol too in the summer school when i went on it. On the other hand, yes Warwick is in the tier above Bristol for maths, everything else I'd say they are on par i'd suppose...i.e. they are roughly same for other courses i'd say from my experience.

i've applied to both for the same course although if i get all my offers i'll be torn between UCL and warwick...but anyways....good luck choosing.

They gave out offers before January this year? Grr. Presumably you'll be visiting them both so wait until then to decide?

Bill Lionheart doesn't think there's a huge difference between Warwick and Bristol for maths: each course is excellent. If you prefer Bristol, you should definitely go for it.

yes i was surprised by that as well.

A big difference in location should be a bigger factor to you than a small difference in course. Go for Bristol.

University life is what you make of it, it's the people you live with/people you know that make the difference. I'm a pretty outgoing person and had a great time at Warwick and so did my friends who came to visit from London and Manchester who had very high expectations as you can imagine. So unless you want to go out and get smashed every single day of the week, I'm pretty sure you'll have the time of your life at Warwick especially considering that you'll have what will probably be the best Student's Union in the country: http://www.warwicksu.com/unionrebuild/

That said, there really isn't much between Warwick and Bristol for maths and I'm saying this as someone studying maths at Warwick, so don't choose one over the other based on that. Career prospects-wise, Warwick may have better links with financial firms though if that's what you're into.

Is there a huge difference in graduate prospects?

No, not at all. But like I said I believe that Warwick has better ties with the financial sector (investment banking, actuarial firms etc.) if that's what you're interested in.

Ok so this is what I think so far...

Pros of Warwick
- Maths degree at Warwick is "superior" to one at Bristol
- Uni has better links with the financial sector
- Uni has great student community
- Less distractions at the campus

Pros of Bristol
- I've applied to do Maths and Comp Sci, in which I have more of an interest than just a straight Maths degree.
- There isn't THAT much of a difference in terms of job prospects
- I love the feel of the uni and the city... there's more to do in Bristol...
- The accommodation is better and I won't have to live in Coventry/Leamington Spa after the first year
- The music scene is better

Just want to point out that it is VERY easy to transfer from "straight maths" to "maths with computing" at Warwick. Oh and believe me, there are loads of things to do on campus! :yep:

From the way you've phrased your points, it looks like you prefer Bristol. If that's the uni you prefer, go for it.

To be honest, I prefer the feel of Bristol, but I don't know if the better course / graduate prospects at Warwick outweighs that...

I fully accept that Warwick is a damn good university but I can't honestly see any graduate employer making any vast distinction between Bristol and Warwick;they're both top universities. Also you've got to spend 3/4 years at this place, you need to make sure you like it. If you like Bristol more, go there. Simple as.

I totally agree. I chose Bristol over Imperial for completely non-academic reasons.

If you're still concerned about the potential for Warwick to be seen as a better uni for maths, what about computing? Bristol may well be considered better for that (though admittedly not according to The Guardian's latest university league tables - The Time has them pretty much the same)
the maths department at Warwick is vastly superior to that of Bristol.

I would not choose Bristol over Warwick because the social life is likely to be better: social life at most universities depends on the luck of who you meet. You have an equal chance of meeting people who you find boring at whatever university you choose so therefore you should just go for the best one academically in my opinion.

As students we tend to get quite specific about the rankings of university departments in relation to one another, but in the real world it seems to me that employers just want good graduates from good universities. Whilst distinctions are to made between certain institutions, Bristol and Warwick are so similar I just can't see it becoming as issue (although this is the perspective of an arts student, maybe's its different for the sciences). So when the two are tied academically, you next consideration (if it isn't the first) should be where you can see yourself fitting in best/being happiest.

This isn't necessarily a question of social life either - it's about atmosphere and personal taste and all that jazz. I chose Bristol over Warwick not because I'm a mad clubber or anything, but mainly for reasons I can't really express; it just felt more my kind of place.

I had straight maths offers from both and chose Bristol for the city, didn't regret it for a second.

Wanting to get away from Bristol was the prime reason for me not applying for maths here. I love campus though; and agree with everyone who says you should choose where appeals to you best.
