what med school should i apply for (pls help)

Hi, I’ve just recently sat my ucat and I’m a bit disappointed and I don’t know where (or if..??) I should apply (due to getting band 3..)
here are my stats:
GCSES: 9999999877 ( 77 in english’s and 8 in latin)
Predicted grades: Maths (A*) Chemistry (A*) and Biology (A but might get it up to an A*)
UCAT: 2190 B3
VR: 610
DM: 700
QR: 880
I’ve done work experience in a GP for 2 weeks and volunteering at a vaccination centre as well as a primary school.
Before my UCAT i was thinking about Bristol, UEA, BSMS and Southampton but now i’m pretty sure that Bristol is probably not realistic. I don’t want to go to scotland but other than that i’m open to suggestions:smile:
I’m not contextual as far as I’m aware.
Thank you so much!!

I think you have to do that research for yourself. You need to look at the teaching and whether you think that would work for you.

Hi,
Your ucat is decently high but it is not high enough for bristol which has the 2nd highest UCAT cutoff below only oxford. I would recommend that you apply to any uni you wish to except for imperial, oxford, bristol. You may want to apply to king’s, UCL but these are slightly risky due to the B3. All other unis you might want to look at and ideally go for unis that dont look at sjt such as cambridge etc.

I'd check where your score ranks when the preliminary scores come out. Using a converter online your score would roughly equate to top 10% in the 3600 system, which is incredibly high. I believe that could be good enough for Bristol, who yes ranks the UCAT highly. Perhaps this could be your aspirational choice?

Check that these Unis still accept you with a Band 3. I know many Unis immediately reject a Band 4, and some don't accept a Band 3 (however I do not know which ones specifically). Your GCSEs are high which is good.

Hi,

Your GCSEs and predicted grades are excellent, which keeps you in a very strong position overall. Although a UCAT score of 2190 with Band 3 means some very UCAT-heavy schools such as Bristol or Southampton are less realistic, you still have good choices if you apply strategically.

UEA should definitely remain on your list while I do not study medicine here (PhD in Biomedicine instead) I know they take a balanced approach, scoring applicants on both academics and UCAT rather than relying on high cut-offs, and with your profile you would still be competitive there.

BSMS is another strong option because they use the BMAT, so your lower UCAT score will not hold you back. Keele and Sunderland both value work experience and personal qualities through their roles and responsibilities form, so they are less reliant on UCAT, while universities like Liverpool, ARU and Plymouth often set more accessible thresholds.

If you prioritise UEA and add a mix of BMAT-focused and UCAT-light schools, you can still put forward a balanced, realistic application. With your strong academic record and experience, you remain in a good position to secure interviews.

Best of luck,
Daniel

Correct, BMAT has been discontinued.

Ah, yes. I had some friends taking it a year or two ago, so I assumed it was still "available". But it looks like it was actually discontinued last year!
