Has a PGDip with Distinction helped me at all compensate for a 2:2?

I recently completed a PG Diploma in Economics at the same university I graduated with a 2:2 from. I made the decision to withdraw from the MRes programme as I had a change of heart when it comes to pursuing a PhD. I pushed through the exams, and averaged 77% in the taught component with 70%+ in all modules and was awarded a PG Diploma as an exit award. I understand the 2:1 minimum requirement and AI filter stuff, but I'm the sort who will apply anyway because you never know and an application only costs me like 2 hours (I will also be applying to more realistic opportunities given the 2:2). I'm just curious for the sake of an impartial voice, how much have I actually helped myself here? I ask because I have heard from someone that a PG Diploma can be looked upon like a failed masters. I'd hate to think I look like a failure because I worked extremely hard to get the grades, I just realised the dissertation wasn't something that interested me and nor did the pursuit of a PhD. I think I may have made a shortsighted mistake here.
