A Level Maths & Further Maths Q&A/Tips

Are you considering A-Level Mathematics/Further Mathematics?

If you are here are our top tips for this subject:

1.

Write out some neat worked examples of some of the more difficult question types which you can refer back to if you are struggling with that topic later in the year. Writing these examples yourself will mean that that are written in a way which you specifically can understand so it saves time overall.

2.

Do as many exam questions as you can, as regularly as you can! Don't just focus on the topics which you have just covered in class, frequently go back over content from earlier in the year to identify which topics you need to go over again for your revision.

3.

Actively seek out the most difficult questions in each chapter and talk through them with your friends/teachers. They are usually the ones worth a lot of marks near the end of papers and you don’t want to miss out on those marks!

4.

Make sure you know which formulae you need to memorise! Maths as a whole is a subject where you have to practice to improve, however if you don't remember the formula correctly in the exam you will not pick up those marks. It can be helpful to make flashcards or keep a poster of the formulae need. If your exam board has a formula booklet, make sure which formulae are included.

A lot of the tips for Maths are applicable for Further Maths too, however here are some specifically for Further Maths!

1.

A lot of the pure further maths topics can be really hard to conceptualise, so make use of YouTube and graphing softwares like Desmos. Visualising the more abstract topics really helps understanding.

2.

There is a lot more content in A Level Further Maths, and it is a lot harder. Have notes ready (either hand written or premade), and follow your specification to ensure you don't miss out on anything.

3.

Use past papers from different exam boards if you run out of practice questions. Be aware there are minor differences in all of them, however the majority of the content remains the same.

This thread can also be used to answer your questions. Just post in the thread and we'll answer as soon as possible.

There are so many additional resources for Edexcel e.g tests and shadow papers [ask your teacher] that there is absolutely no need to use another boards papers.

Happy to support - currently teaching Edexcel Maths and Further Maths.

No because they are for teachers and the board forbids us to share them.

Dr Frost has plenty of resources.
