Location and facilities combination

I've been looking at unis for sports science or coaching and have found unis with great facilities but they are miles from any large towns/cities. Are there any unis with a combination of great sports facilities (labs, gyms, sports halls and pitches) and easy access to city/nightlife? Looking at unis that require a UCAS points total of 120 or less.

Hiya Rominess,

I'm sorry nobody could get to you sooner!! LJMU has an amazing School of Sport and Exercise Science, we are rated number 1 in the North West for Sports Science (QS World University Rankings 2025). We offer both Sports and Exercise Science and Sports Coaching as undergraduate degree options.

The course is endorsed by the Chartered Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (CASES) Undergraduate Endorsement Scheme. Teaching is via a combination of lectures, interactive seminars, one-to-one tutorials, online activities, laboratory-based practical work and group work. Guided independent study using our libraries, laboratories and the web accounts for 70-80% of each module. Web-based content is also available through our virtual learning environment. Work experience plays a key role in your career development. In your final year, you'll complete an applied placement to practise what you've learned and gain a head start in the job market. You can also choose an optional Sandwich Year in your third year for a full year of work-based learning. Some students continue their studies at master’s level at LJMU in sport and clinical biomechanics, sport psychology, sport and exercise physiology, sport nutrition, strength and conditioning and teaching. You may also study other master’s degrees, such as physiotherapy.

Our Sport Coaching degree offers a unique blend of academic theory and practical application, equipping you with the skills and knowledge to excel in the dynamic world of sports coaching. During your degree, you will have the opportunity to do applied coaching on work placements in a variety of settings e.g. schools, clubs etc. This will help you to develop professional skills relevant to the coaching field e.g. observation, listening and communication. It will also help you to develop a network of contacts and to further your coaching C.V. Our excellent student placement office can help you source placements and in the past students have completed work experiences in Liverpool, across the U.K. and even abroad. Hi @Rominess,

You can find out more information about studying sports with us. I've attached below a video of one of our students but you can also hear from more current, past students as well as explore our sport courses here. Our sports and exercise science course is 3rd in the North West for Teaching Quality-Guardian University Guide 2025. You can explore the modules, entry requirements and how to apply here.
Our sports arena is a 10 minute drive from Preston city centre and about a 25 minute commute by public transport which is completely do able. Our sports arena is Preston’s premier multi-sports venue. We cater for a wide range of outdoor sports such as football, rugby, athletics, hockey, tennis, netball, cycling and rounders.

The arena features a variety of outdoor sports facilities, including two 3G pitches, a hockey pitch and recently resurfaced athletics track. In addition to our sports facilities, the arena also has meeting rooms and a café. You can explore it further here.

Named after a Preston and England footballing legend, the Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre is our multi-million pound, state-of-the-art indoor facility located at the heart of our Preston Campus. We offer a range of activities from sports clubs to instructor-led classes, court hire and a well-equipped gym. You can find out more information here.

Do let us know if you have any further questions 🙂
Best wishes, ^Zac
