Do unis give handouts/paper documents?

As title really, does university provide you with worksheet, hand outs, paper documents?

I imagine this depends on which subject, which uni, and each individual professor. However, generally things are online.

Very rare as most unis have sustainability policies and targets encouraging them to not print tons of stuff. You can print them yourself as a student although you'll have to use your printing credit for uni printers or your own printer/paper/ink at home. I used to print all of my handouts (provided digitally) for one module because it was more convenient for me, but not for another for example.

I hope you are doing well! I think this really does depend on the university and the course. A lot of universities have definitely converted now to online for everything so it may be less likely than it used to be. However, if you find it easier to learn from information through physical paper, it may be worth asking your tutors to ask if they would be able to print out information beforehand.

Hi Anon,

The only time I received paper handouts if I was in a lab session (I study biochemistry) as we obviously couldn't use our laptops in the lab. However, the practical protocols were available online as well.

We always had access to the online resources before the in person session, and I do know some people who printed out resources before lectures/workshops to annotate the slides by hand.

Hey,

Throughout my undergraduate course, the vast majority (99%) of materials were digital - however, there were occasional paper hand-outs if we were doing an in-class activity or a worksheet was being distributed last-minute. Typically students bring their laptops/phones to most of their lectures, so any presentations/documents can be emailed directly to students before the class or found on Canvas. 🙂

Hi Anom,

As the other commenters have stated this depends on the university and the tutor themselves. It is a good idea to bring some sort of electronic device to class, like a laptop, as a lot of content and work is digital 💻️.

If you do not have a laptop, you may be able to borrow one at the university so it's worth inquiring about. If you have a reason that you need to have handouts of complete work on paper. I recommend emailing the university and discussing this and I'm sure arrangements can be made!

Mind does and it annoys me a lot. So it probably depends on your university and course (especially if your classes are small).

I prefer paper/physical stuff but I hate ring binders and I don’t like having paper laying around these days so I had decided to go digital as having organised notes that wouldn’t be lying around all over the place outweighed my strong preference for physical stuff.

This is definitely dependent on your course, your professor, and your university.

I would say I got more handouts than expected, but it wasn't a lot. I think in many cases they printed out spare copies of the documents already provided online, just in case someone in the class wasn't able to access them that day. Most professors and courses will do everything online, and you can choose whether or not to print something out for yourself at your own cost.

For some classes, it may be a lot more helpful to have handouts/print documents yourself. I did this for some of my classes, as it made it easier to complete assignments and study later on.

Hey!

From my experience, you do get some handouts at uni but not loads, and definitely not in every class. I remember having a few for group activities during lessons, but we didn’t usually keep those afterwards. There were others that we hung on to, and I’m pretty sure we had one workbook as well, though that might depend on the course.

A lot of the time resources are shared online through the uni system, so you’ll probably find yourself downloading and printing things (or just working from a laptop) rather than relying on paper handouts. It really does vary depending on the subject you’re studying and the teaching style of your lecturers, though, so your experience might look a bit different.

Either way, unis provide loads of resources and support to help you with studying and assignments, so you won’t be left struggling without materials. You’ll always have access to what you need, just sometimes in a more digital format.
