The Student Room Group

Delusional GYG

Hi guys, I'm not very used to using the student room and truth be told I don't even remember making this account, but I thought it'd be cool if I started a gyg.
So I'm in Year 12 currently, and I am going into Year 13 in September, and my Year 12 experience wasn't the greatest, since I ended up receiving a provisional predicted grade (Meaning I'm not totally and utterly cooked yet) of BBB. I take Maths, Physics, and Computer Science at A-Level. Call me egotistical if you like, I mean, I already know I am but the grades I want to get in Year 13 are A*A*A*. As for my plans, I want to go and do Engineering at Edinburgh or Birmingham, and while I know that I don't need an A*A*A* to do that, I think that setting myself that goal and actually working towards it will lead to a more conducive and academic missile performance when I am at uni.

Some facts about me:
- I have very long arms and big hands, and feet
- I used to take Further Maths A-Level, but I dropped it in the first week because I thought it would be too hard (╥﹏╥)
- If it wasn't already clear, I have a very bad problem with studying that I plan on eviscerating

Some other things I plan on doing:
- Get back into reading more books (some recommendations would be appreciated  )
- Cutting down since I'm kinda fat now
- Being more consistent about things
- Being more organised (I just started using Notion for this so I suppose that is a good thing)

To summarise:
This is what I'm studying:
Maths, Physics and Computer Science at A-Level
This is my current predicted grades:
BBB
This is what I want to get:
A*A*A*
Uh if you have any questions please do ask

For reading, you can find suggested reading list in some university webpages. If yours don't have one, Oxford and Cambridge do and you can use those for any other one as well, and then you can include them in your personal statement. It's also a good way of making sure that engineering is what you really want to do.

I don't do A levels or anything similar but I feel like with hard work and consistency you can do it! Try understanding your maths specially really well, bc that will help with the other two and you'll so better overall!

Also, careful with setting too many goals because you might get really tired or burnt out in the first week if you're not used to it. Go little by little. I'd say set a goal for each month and when it's a habit more or less start on the next one (better long term results).

Welcome to the GYG community :wavey:
I'm also going into year 13 in September and with u good luck for year 13 xx
Haha being delusional is the only way any of us are making it through year 13 tbh
What sort of books did you used to read? I'm really into murder mysteries, crime and thriller books so Helen Fields, Patricia Cornwell and Jo Nesbo are authors I would recommend if you're into that
And I look forward to following ur journey this year

I mean for personal statement reading ive kinda already covered all of that stuff and I've finishe my personal statement, but I was more just talking about books to read for pleasure but thank you regardless. I think you are right on setting a habit thing so I'll try it out.

So, books I used to read, some of my favourites were dystopian-style books, if that's right, like 1984, Tender is the Flesh, and Fahrenheit 451. Honestly, I never gave murder mysteries a thought, but now that I think about it, that sounds rather intriguing. I shall give your recommendations a read. Thank you!

So today was an alright day I'd say, I made some good progress on both my NEA for computer science, as well as on my revision for my radians, binomial and differentiation test that I have when I get back to school (My last chance to improve my predicted grades 🙏) and I started reading The Perfect Kill by Helen Fields as well as The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. I thought I would include a little tidbit about myself here; though I find many research tasks to be tedious and pointless at times, I do love reading Wikipedia articles for whatever reason, as well as playing Wikipedia speedruns.

Hi, I am also new to tsr and actually made an account to find other students like me to talk to about grades and generally achieving the best possible grade i an in year 13! i am also in year 12 starting year 13 in september and I also take alevel maths. I noticed that most of our goals align (i also want to achieve A*, across all my subjects and i have personal goals of my own). It's not egotistical to want to get the best possible but for me a little delusional since i am currently on a C 🙂 . I’m confident I can turn this around, especially since I haven’t yet put in the effort that’s truly required. I would appreciate if you could give some revision tips for maths (ps i have never actually sat down and revised for maths because i never know what to do ☹️)

Ooh let me put you on! Wikipedia speed runs are where you get two entirely random and unrelated Wikipedia articles, such as humpback whale and the 2001 British census and then attempt to navigate between the two as fast as possible only using the hyperlinks in the articles. Sounds fun right 😭

Well while I might not be the best person for this, I truly think the best way to revise maths (and the way I've started), is to work through problems of increasing difficulty for all your topics. If you have a tutor or someone who can help you understand, let them explain what you don't understand. Otherwise, what I like to do might be kind of frowned upon, but I take pictures, or describe my problem to AI and get it to explain each solution step by step. Hope this helps 🙏🙏 and if you need any other help, feel free to DM if the student room has that, or just reply to my comments!

I forgot to do yesterday as well, so yesterday I got some great progress down on my radians revision since thats on the test that i have when i get back to school, and that was literally it lol, however I do feel that yesterday was the good start of a productive year (im just gonna start year 13 in september even though my school hasnt started yet).

I'll be honest, I didn't forget to do yesterday's or the day before that's gyg update because I honestly did like f**k all and I felt really crappy about that, hence the no update. I tried to bring myself back today, and I think I achieved that since I spent around 2 hours today doing some maths revision for that test that I have on the first full week that I have back, and now that I think about it, tomorrow is my first day back, guys, wish me luck 🙏🙏. I just thought as well that I would thank those of you who have supported me on this so far, namely @agent_duck343, and for your guys' sake, I'm gonna make this year my bih 🙏

I thought the next few weeks would have flopped guys but I am innundated with new things to do and good news ) ! So, grades, what this was about. I had two physics tests before the summer I got back, one A one B, same with the maths tests I did 2 weeks ago and got back, and and A in the computer science test i just did. Not the best start I would say, but oh well. I just found out im still predicted a BBB as well ;( but im gonna appeal computer science to an A trust :tongue:ray . Anyways in other news, I am now captain of senior public speaking and im doing that in october, I have a driving test then as well, im in the maths challenge and physics olympiad for my school so i have that to prepare for, as well as like 6 tests in the great month of october, so! We will see how that goes. I have actually started properly locking in, I know ive probably said that before, but those were all lies and I knew it. But I actually feel like im flowing through work for like hours now so thats a great sign. Sorry for the bad grammar punctuation maybe spelling and horrendous formatting :tongue:ray .
