Hi there,

It entirely depends on your personal interests. Most university students prefer a smaller compact laptop or Chromebook that they can carry around with ease. However, it sounds as if your degree will be technology-heavy, so you want something with appropriate storage and capacity to fulfill your requirements.

I would advise going somewhere like Curry's PC World, and speaking to their team about what you might be after. They can help you compare different laptops, and you can really see which one you may prefer.

If you do purchase one before September, I would advise you to look at insurance for your laptop; this can cover you for certain parts of the laptop if it breaks down or gets damaged. During university, you will use your laptop a lot for assignments, so you want to be assured it will last you the 3 years.

Hope this helps, and good luck,

Hi @HamzaELhamouz ,

This is a great question.

Personally I've been using an Acer windows laptop for the last four years and it's been great. However my course doesn't require a powerful device, it's really just for writing assignment.

Although I cannot add the best recommendations for types of laptops, I do want to add some information on cost-saving. Remember to use your student discount! You can search a variety of tech student discounts on "studentbeans" and "unidays". Additionally, you could look of the refurbished market, personally I got my laptop from Currys, however it was their official clearance shop based on eBay.

I hope this helps please feel free to ask me any questions,

Does your coursework require software, programs, etc. that are only on Windows laptops or MacBooks?

Is there a computer lab on campus that has the software, programs, etc.? If there is, I might feel free to choose a laptop that doesn't have them. I say "might" because the computer lab hours might be too small for me to finish an assignment.

I prefer laptops that have a long battery life, in other words the battery percentage doesn't decrease too quickly in a day. I used a MacBook Pro - if I remember the type of laptop correctly - and its battery percentage decreased too quickly. It went from 100% to near 0% over about two hours, if I remember.

People can take out the battery of some laptops, plug them to a charger, and have the laptop function. I don't know if this type of laptop is preferable to laptops that don't let you easily take out the battery.

Hi there,

This is a great question!

I study geography, and my course can sometimes require extra programs, so I needed a laptop that would support that. I have a Lenovo Ideapad, and love it! I have been able to download everything I need to, stay organized, and it has lasted me for the past four+ years with minimal issues.

For courses that require a considerable amount of extra software/programs, I'd always recommend Windows. I have only heard complaints of issues from students who own MacBooks, with some add-ons not being available to them at all. While they are known for great reliability and battery life, it would be beneficial for you to consider the needs of your course before making a purchase.

As it has been suggested, visiting somewhere like Curry's PC World would be a fantastic idea. Their staff are often super helpful, and can help to show you all of the great options for your specific needs.

I hope this helps,
