Jobs relevant to DClinPsy

Hi, I’m hoping to get onto the DClinPsy doctorate when I finish my MSc in psychology (will finish the course around December 2026). I am currently a TA working in a primary school, my role is a lot more than it sounds I do a hell of a lot and work closely with external agencies. Out of curiosity has anyone been able to get onto this doctorate with a job like this? What other experience could be relevant not just the typical assistant psychology jobs.

Hi,

I created a OP around most of what you are asking with more info about the typical route and experiences below.

Plenty of people get on the doctorate with a range of different experiences so it is not impossible you could get on, but based on what you have said it may be unlikely. My first question would be how do you know you actually want to be a Clin Psych if you have never worked alongside one or done some of the key tasks they do on a daily basis. A TA is much more aligned with Ed Psych so this would be your first barrier to getting on the doctorate. The other thing is that the doctorate expects you to be largely independent from day 1, so this means working therapeutically with complex presentations across the lifespan and doing research to a doctoral level, so you need to think about how you can evidence competency in these areas before you apply. I dont say any of these things to put you off, you may be an excellent candidate, but you do need to think about how you can prove to interviewers what i have said above.
