How do you write a CV

I’ve just finished sixth form and am looking for my first job during my gap year. But I’ve never written a CV before, how do you structure it? What do you include? Please help

Hiya!
It depends on which industry you go into (a creative CV would look completely different to an academic), but generally you want to include clear labelled sections including

Title with your name and contact details.

Education with the school name, subjects and grades,

Work experience with all of your past/ current employment if you have any and a short explanation of the skills learnt and what you did.

Training, including any courses you've done, DofE, lectures attended etc with a short description of what you learnt/ skills developed.

At the bottom have your references listed with the position and contact details.

You can also include languages spoken (label it as elementary if you're not fluent or just learning it), skills, eg teamwork/ Excel and maybe an example of where you needed it, hobbies, etc.
I used a template from my brother working in science and it's a good basic guide so I'd recommend having someone send you an editable copy of their CV so you can just input your own info. Otherwise there are CV templates on word (I think) if you want to do it from scratch.
I hope this helps!

Hiya,
there are some useful online resources and articles HERE that you may be interested in. If you are looking for a nice template or layout, Canva is a great tool that you can play around with 🙂

Just to add on, I would suggest to pick a clear and easily readable font and use a single column that is easy to understand at a glance. Remember to read the job description carefully, align your keywords to make it relevant and tailor your CV for each individual company/listing. If you are applying online, you might also want to include a cover letter or cover email to explain your motivations on wanting the role, what you hope to contribute or grow in 🤗
I hope this helps.

Congrats on finishing sixth form, that’s a great start. You can use Instict.ai to create and review your CV for free, it shows what to include, how to structure it, and how to make it stand out for your first job.

Thank you, I have already written my CV but please stop with AI. I don’t care how “useful” it is, it is making humanity more stupid , it is draining water from poorer neighbourhoods and causing rising energy prices. Use your brains please
