Oxford grades help

Hey !

Basically I am going into year 13 this september taking Further maths, English Language, Psychology, Welsh Bacc. (i know the subjects are kind of weird but i originally didnt know what i wanted to do at uni). Anyways so I took my whole maths A Level this year and got a B but I have already started applying to Oxford for maths so I don't really know what to do at this point. I still want to continue applying and hope I get in as it's something I have wanted to do for years.

Do we think it would be a good idea to ask to resit 1/2 of the maths exams ( i got A, A, B, C as i had some personal problems at the end of exam season but not something i can appeal about) or does anyone know of people getting in on an A or B in maths if they got an A* in FM?

Thank you !!! x

hey!
im also going into y13, but i thought maybe i could give u some stats that could help, considering that im also applying to oxford for maths (hopefully we see each other there 🙂 ), and my maths teacher is an oxford maths graduate, so i have sat with her and gone through previous years worth of admissions stats.

honestly, if you can, the best thing you can do is to resit the A-level. unfortunately, it is necessary to achieve A*A*A at the very least to enter oxford for mathematics, with both A*s being in maths and fm, and oxford do not even contextualise the A* down to an A typically, so to do this with a B would be very hard indeed.
I dont believe there have been any offers made to students with B grades unfortunately ☹️ the lowest STEM offer made was an A*AA, but it wasn't in maths sadly.

if you can get the maths to an A*, it would honestly be your best shot. oxford is crazy competitive, and im honestly not sure if they would consider anything less for a maths degree.

otherwise, if you are able to get it to an A, perhaps yoi could consider cambridge? they are also sticklers for their double A* criteria, but there are certain cases where, if you are able to achieve i think an S/S or 1/1 grade in the step exams they can give you an A*AA offer? you might want to look into that maybe?

im sorry if this doesnt help or doesnt give you the answer you were looking for. i do think that we all deserve a good shot, and to make a competitive applicatipn, an A* in maths really is the very best thing you can try to do.

Good luck with everything!!!

Computer says: "Retake A-Level Maths and do tonnes of past papers." 🙂
