Best chance to become a solicitor

Hi there, I want to become a solicitor so I am applying to Cambridge as an affiliated student this fall. I currently attend the University of Toronto and my GPA is just barely behind the first-class degree requirement. The difference is 0.02, so I’m not sure if it’s negligible enough to bump me to a first-class degree. With that said, I’m sure Cambridge is competitive enough where just barely meeting the requirement is grounds for rejection. There’s also the LNAT— which isn’t much of a problem because of my LSAT score/experience— however, the idea of sitting another exam on such short notice is daunting (the only availability is in just over a week).

This has me wondering if I should apply as an affiliated student for BA Geography instead. I have interest in the subject so I can write a good personal statement and, more importantly, the requirement is only a 2:1 which I’m far above. Since non-law students can become solicitors, especially with the Oxbridge advantage, the BA Geography seems like my best chance to become a solicitor.

I only recognized Law in the UK as a viable path over the weekend so I understand this plan is a bit haphazard. I plan on putting a UCAS application in, in addition to my US Law school applications, just to broaden my scope.

I’m posting this here for advice and/or criticism so if you have any please feel free to share.

Hello,

To reassure you, there is no advantage to studying law at undergraduate level if you become a solicitor in the UK. Many students, myself included, receive training contracts after taking a non-law degree (I studied History at Oxford). I then went on to complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Law as a conversion course, and am now qualifying via the SQE route. This is a very well-trodden path: over half of trainee solicitors at many top law firms come from non-law backgrounds. Law firms actually value the diversity of academic backgrounds, as it often brings different ways of thinking to the profession.

So, if you’re drawn to Geography, I would recommend pursuing this at Cambridge. As you say, Cambridge is a competitive university, so I would say it is better to apply for the course you are certain you meet the requirements for.

The key things firms look at are your academic consistency, commitment to law, and demonstration of the skills they need (research, analysis, communication, problem-solving). Any degree at Cambridge will be looked upon favourably so long as you can also demonstrate your motivation for a legal career. Cambridge has a fantastic legal careers network so this should be no problem for you.

Best of luck with your applications, and I hope this helps!
