GCSEses needed for uni

Hi so I’m wondering since loads of people keep saying, what gcse grades do I need to get into unis like UCL, Cambridge, Oxford, Durham and Southampton. As in how many 9,8,7,6 est sonce they show academic growth between years and I’ve seen the average gcse grades of those unis I want to go to and they are all extremely high. I know A levels are more important but why is this the case and if they do take it into account what would be the minimum needed

Hi, you can check the minimum entry requirements for all subjects at Durham on the website which I’ve linked here. If you have any Durham-specific questions though I’d love to help .

Hi!

It depends on what course you are thinking of doing, but you are very right that A-levels definitely count more.
I do zoology at University of Southampton and the GCSE requirements are simply: 'Applicants must hold GCSE English Language (or GCSE English), Mathematics and Science at minimum grade C/4.'

To see the entry requirements for other subjects at Southampton, you can use this course finder (https://www.southampton.ac.uk/courses) then click on 'full entry requirements'.

For courses such as medicine, the GCSE requirements can be more strict, so it will depend what course you are aiming to study. The average GCSE grade being high is likely due to those students also doing well in A-levels, so I would not worry too much about GCSE grades for university entry

I hope this can help
