GCSEs for oxford

hi, I got my gcses this week and I got 99888776665. this was a shock after being predicted 9999888777. I got 9s in lit/lang and 8s in history/media. I got 6s in maths/physics/chemistry and a 5 in business.

I wanted to apply to oxford for classics, but can anyone help as to whether my grades are too low? i know the gcses in 6/5s are unrelated to the degree, but I have a feeling they would rather a clean slate of grades 7-9.

for reference I chose english lit, classics and history alevel

thank you!

Suspect this will be the advice from most people but because Oxford contextualises GCSEs it very much depends on the overall performance of your school. I wouldn’t worry too much though - classics isn’t the most competitive course and the 8s and 9/ are in the most relevant subjects. Would definitely not let the 5 in business put you off from giving it a shot!

thank you!! I go to a non selective school but we are rated slightly above average in performance, although I exceeded by schools grade average - does this work in my favour?

Remains a bit of a mystery exactly how they work out the contextual GCSE score but from what I can gather I don’t think your GCSEs would result in you being automatically deselected, but you’d want very strong predicted grades/written work/PS/CAT score as those who have a clean slate of A*s will have an advantage going in. Might be worth looking at the admissions reports from this year (Keble have a pretty comprehensive list) to see what the exact weighting of each component of the application is for Classics
