Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming to the University of Sheffield!

Hi everyone!

With a lot of you having recently accepted an offer to study at Sheffield, I thought it would be useful to share a couple of things I wish I’d known before coming here!

1. Make the most of the residence life events available to those in student halls- it's an easy way to meet new people and make friends whilst also taking part in a fun activity like pilates or even cooking classes!

2. Be prepared for the hills and weather in Sheffield! Have a good pair of trainers and an umbrella (and thick winter coat) as it is known to snow in Sheffield. The trainers will also come in handy for trips to the Peak District or to the nearby Rivelin Valley.

3. Explore other areas outside of central Sheffield for fun activities to do and other yummy food places, for example Kelham Island!

4. Finally don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and join societies- even if you’ve never tried the activity before! Everyone is super friendly and welcoming and it’s one of the best ways to meet people with similar interests and make friends outside of your course. Having a part-time job could help with that too- you could even work as a student ambassador for the university with flexible work around your studies!

If you’ve got an offer to study at Sheffield, is there anything you’re curious about or want advice on before you start? Let me know:smile:

Hi GM2024, 👋

Great to hear you are joining us this year!

You should get emailed directly when this will be as it will be specific to your department. But of you have any questions, do drop a line to [email protected] and they will be able to guide you further.

In terms of fresher's fairs, every year there is a the official freshers and freebies fair (which I definitely recommend as there's usually free pizza!). This year this will be on Monday 22nd September.

There is also an Activities fair where societies will be set up with information about what activities and events they get involved with and how you can join. This will be on Thursday 25th September.

And there is also the Sports Fair on Friday 26th September with info about the many sports clubs you can get involved with!

If you go to this page, there is a whole host of info on freshers week activities including different club nights you can get tickets for. 😄

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

All best wishes,
Phoebe 😊
