PhD Advice

Hi, I'm currently a Masters student (Sept 2025 intake; MA Global Literatures and Cultures), and since my course is only for a year, I'm aware that I have to make a decision on if I am going to do my PhD or not in the next couple of months. My interests are in postcolonial studies, comparative literature and cultural hybridity. My parents have funded my education so far, but I really want to fund my PhD on my own, and due to this decision I'm looking for fully-funded scholarships, or work for a bit and save up enough money to do one later on in life. What steps should I be taking to make up my mind?

Fully funded PhDs are highly competitive, so you really need to get noticed as something special - develop your research proposal as soon as you can, if you are going that route; if you're looking to work as part of a research team then go to conferences in those fields, network, be seen, present at an event if you have something to contribute (hell, do that anyway, it's all good practice for your PhD). Just be aware that studentships and funded PhDs are rare, and finding one in your field is rarer still - if you can't get one, saving up is a good idea, but you could also consider doing a part-time PhD, taking longer to do it, but spreading the cost and allowing you the time to work and earn too
