Weekly Food Shop - Current Kingston Student

Hi everyone,

I hope those of you who are starting university in September are excited and getting ready for your next chapter. For those of you who will be living on your own for the first time it may be difficult to know how much you may spend a week on food and what exactly you are going to make. So, I thought I would share some tips and an idea of what one of my weekly shopping lists might look like.

Top tips

- Plan and do a shop for the week so you don’t have to keep going back. This stops you from spending more.

- Use ingredients more than once, especially expensive stuff like meat.

- Batch cook meals you can freeze so you don’t have to properly cook every night.

- Take turns in cooking with flatmates if you can to save time and money I did this is second year.

Shopping list

First, I plan out what I am going to eat for the week so I can use ingredients across meals. I have also added to the week meals that I have already made in previous weeks which I just need to get them out of the freezer. Its good to make sure you are both adding and taking from your freezer each week.

Breakfast - Porridge, honey and cinnamon/Greek yogurt, honey and fruit

Lunch Cheese Sandwich’s/Egg on toast

Tea/Dinner’s -

Monday Chicken burgers and chips

Tuesday Curry and rice (From the Freezer)

Wednesday Gyros and chips

Thursday Sausage, jacket potato, peas and gravy

Friday Spaghetti bolognaise (From The freezer)

Saturday Full English (Sausage, Eggs, Beans, Potato waffles, Toast)

Sunday Sausage, peas and cheese pasta

Shopping list

I like to split my list up so it is easier to find things in the supermarket.

Meat

- Chicken £3.99

- Sausages £1.79

Veg/Fruit

- Iceberg lettuce 89p

- Tomatoes 99p

- Cucumber 89p

- 2 Jacket (baking) potato’s 48p

- Plums £1.99

Dairy

- Cheese £2.79

- Greek yogurt 95p

- Milk 85p

Other

- Ciabatta buns £1.35

- Rice 52p

- Frozen Chips £1.35

- Flatbreads £1.49

- Bread £1.09

- Spaghetti 28p

- Eggs £1.79

- Beans 27p

- Potato waffles £1.59

Total: £25.34 The prices are based off Aldi where I usually shop, Kingston also has a Lidl which is great.

I have not included any snacks on this shopping list and I have also left the following off the list that I would usually already have such as:

- Spices and seasoning

- Sauces/Gravy/Honey

- Frozen fruit (To go on top of Greek yogurt)

- Butter/oil

- Frozen peas

- Oats

Sometimes the first few shops as a student may cost a little more as you are building up your food cupboard items but then as the weeks go on it should be much easier to shop cost effectively.

I hope this has been helpful and maybe given you some inspiration and ideas for September. If you have any tips, feel free to add them below.
