Warwick Maths and Physics

I didn't make it into Maths, but they offered me to do Maths and Physics instead. I see that it contains much less important Maths pure topics. I am fine with doing Physics, but I am still a mathematician at heart. Do they allow students to attend lectures, which are not part of their course in their free time? Because if there will be some free time, I would like to try to attend the lectures that mathematicians have as their compulsory modules on 1st year to still get a great understanding of pure maths.

Short answer: Yes, you are allowed to attend any lectures you like whenever you like.

I believe you are still taught all the "important" pure maths (especially in first year) such that you should not be shut off from doing any of the third year modules that are offered to maths students. They will be different modules to maths i.e. you won't sit with maths students but you will learn the same content nonetheless.

Having done maths and known people from maths and physics I don't think it would be a wise application of your time to go to all the maths compulsory modules. Introduction to probability, Modelling 1 & 2 and mathematics by computer are not really very useful to pure maths. Foundations is still pure maths however, I'd be lying if I said I used anything except equivalence classes from it so again, it's kind of unimportant unless you want to get into set theory.

Is there a specific area of mathematics you want to go into or are interested in? I'm pretty sure anyone who does Physics and Mathematics can build up all the prerequisites needed to undertake any maths module up to third year as long as they pick their modules carefully.

Yes you can, it is completely possible. The Maths and Physics course is run through the maths department, so you are in the same place as the pure maths students. Many people go to extra lectures out of interest, and if in first year you take some of the core maths modules and do well, sometimes it is even possible to transfer. The best thing is to email the department directly and ask, they are very helpful with this kind of question.
