Engineering degree

Hi. I am about to start a level 3 extended diploma in engineering, but I would also like to progress to a Russell group university once I finish. I would like to study mechanical or civil engineering at university.

Is it necessary to take A level maths or not along with the BTEC level 3?

Not necessarily but would be off great help. Unis like bristol don't require A level maths but you would have to sit there aptitude test. Bath also lowered there requirements so you can go there as well. Make sure to get good grades on engineering principles, further maths and calculus at a minimum a merit for each but for higher ranking unis try get distinction in all of them

I completed a level 3 extended diploma in engineering in 2021, alongside A-Level Maths. I graduated with BEng (Hons) in civil engineering from the University of Birmingham in 2024. I had to complete an aptitude test, however my final UCAS offer did not include A-Level Maths, so I don't think you have to take it however I would suggest giving it a go to help build your knowledge ready for Uni. I would also recommend Birmingham if you're unsure between civils or mechanical as you are able to switch between engineering courses at the end of first year.

Why a Russell group? Lots of the non-RG are actually better like Bath, Loughborough and Oxford Brookes.
