What makes a lifelong friendship?

Maybe I'm different to everyone else but if I make a close friendship with someone, I expect them to be by my side for life.
Why else would you form a close friendship with someone unless you want it to be a lifelong commitment of some kind.
Yet whenever I've had a close friendship with someone, we've either drifted apart (which I know is a natural part of life) or they've found someone else they'd rather spend time with, leaving me feeling rejected and hurt, especially when they consistently promised we'd be friends for life (though we were both young at the time). I just don't understand why someone would promise something like that if they didn't mean it. I know people and their circumstances change over time, but it feels like everyone who's ever entered my life and promised to stay, has left and it damages my trust for future friendships and/or relationships.

Am I being unrealistic for wanting a close friendship with someone who 'gets' me? Am I perhaps trying too hard.
I just can't seem to find anyone that I connect well with who wants to be a part of my life.
