Gap year study advice before studying Pharmacy

Hi!! I have a place to study Pharmacy next year, and I want to make sure I stay in the habit of studying during my gap year. Does anyone have any recommendations for studying/reading I can do to prepare this year, or any online courses that would be good to do in the meantime? I'm concerned about falling behind with content next year due some personal circumstances, so I want to be as prepared as possible.

Hi,

You don’t really need to prepare before starting first year, as most of the content will be new for everyone. That said, if you do want to do a bit of prep, it could be useful to brush up on some basics like cell biology, anatomy and physiology, and some foundations of chemistry, for example bonding, acids and bases, functional groups, and chemical structures, or any areas of biology or chemistry you feel less confident with.

Reading Medicines, Ethics and Practice can give you a good introduction to pharmacy law, and it may also be helpful to familiarise yourself with conversions, concentrations and dilutions for pharmaceutical calculations.

Familiarising yourself with the British National Formulary for drug classes could be beneficial, and working part-time in a pharmacy can help with clinical skills, but again it’s not essential.

Your gap year is also a great chance to explore other interests such as travelling, learning a new language, picking up a hobby, or simply taking some time to relax before uni. It’s important to balance wanting to study and enjoying your year.

Wishing you all the best,

The Oxford Chemistry Primer 'Foundations of Organic Chemistry' by Michael Hornby and Josephine Peach is a very thorough and comprehensive book, Don't need to study it in depth but it would keep your knowledge sharp if you wanted to.
