The Student Room Group

all 9s in GCSEs ask me anything

Okay I did get 1 8 in Art... but still!!
I'm not really 'naturally smart' or 'gifted' I have been consistently working hard to these grades for years.

I did maths + eng lit edexcel
Eng lang, chem, bio, phys, geo, re, art, spanish AQA

Also OCR FMSQ (ad maths) (got A)

Feel free to ask any questions about any subject ☺️

hello! i hope you are well, thank you for your post. i'm ally, a student going into year ten in september, and i'm doing fairly similar courses, aiming for the same top grades! i'm curious to hear about your favourite revision / studying methods, or a rough estimate of how many hours of studying you recommend, as well as anything else you would advise! thank you xx

Btw folks, you have no proof that this person actually did get top grades - or that their supposed 'advice' is going to make any difference to your grades.

Hi ally, for triple scinece I did all the pmt questions and every past paper as well as the combined aqa papers they are really good practise and have some difficult qs. Mark schemes tend to repeat themselves alot so I had a whole board with common terminology and key questions or anything I found difficult which I reviewed before my exam. The specification was golden just memorise all of it using flashcards or whatever method works but make sure you understand content too with videos.
For maths it was consistent practise and nailing down every topic and for more essay subjects like geo eng re I would practise essays in timed conditions and receive feedback from my teachers which I would work on and integrate into my next essay. I also made lots of essay plans and for english lit I knew the books through and through and made sure I understood the texts- I knew each text so well I didn't need to memorise quotes as I knew them all already. For spanish/french there are remade flashcards memorise every word from the specification going chosen language to English you will exceed in listening and reading if u do this it's the best thing ever (as well as past papers ofc).
Regarding hours studied I'm not too sure but I did study every day ranging from 1 hour to 3 on school days and on weekends it depended cuz if I had mocks maybe like 5 hours but my art coursework took a lot of time too which I haven't factored in the times. Don't worry too much about timings quality matters much more
Wishing you the best of luck with getting top grades

How sad that the education system has been dumbed down since 2000. I never understood why they tried to fix what wasn't broke pre-2000.

GCSEs and A levels were harder pre-2000, and harder still in the 1980s (although the much tougher O levels used to be in place of GCSEs until around 1987).
