A-Level Choices

I've picked history, politics and economics. However, I'm torn on if I should add maths as a 4th, or stick with these 3.

Depends; what do you wnt to take for a degree/ apprenitceship?

Maths is only significant if you are aiming at an Economics degree - its actually more important than an A level in Economics which surprises many people.

And in this case I'd suggest that you substitute Maths for one of the other subjects rather than taking 4 A levels. No University requires or prefers 4 A levels - for any degree subject - and by taking on extra work that you don't need, you are risking all of your grades. Remember that AAA will always look better than ABBB - and that could cost you a Uni place.

I'm looking at law but I also want to keep my options open in case I change my mind.

Thank you very much. I think I'll stick with these then.

If ur looking at law, then no maths is fine. However, if you want to keep options open you really should do maths as its arguably better than econ as @McGinger said - hope this helps

Hi I was in a very similar situation to you. I initially picked politics, economics, maths and sociology with the intention to definitely drop one by the end of year 12 - because you do not need 4 a levels. I also wanted to go into law, but after enjoying my politics lessons I am looking to study politics then do a conversion into law. I would recommend you take all 4 and then drop whichever one you don't enjoy, as soon as possible. I dropped economics because I didn't enjoy the content as much as maths. If I didn't pick maths, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to drop economics and would have been stuck with it. Hope that makes sense!

I know a lot of people who tried taking four 4 A-levels and had to drop one due to the workload. If you know you can handle the work and think you will apply all these courses in your future, then go for it, but if you're bad at handling a lot of work and stress, it's not worth it in my opinion

unlike the others I’d actually suggest adding maths at first! I know lots of people who ended up not liking one of their choices so they dropped it and carried on with their other 3 A-levels. If you have the option to drop 1 A level after the first few weeks I’d give maths a go and then drop it once you’re sure you’re happy with your other subjects? up to you
